My Son In Law : Staff Sgt. David Day
Staff Sergeant David Pirie Day, age 26, was killed in the line of duty on April 24, 2011, while serving as an EOD Tech with the 2nd Marine Special Operation Battalion with a Division of the United States Marine Corps in Afghanistan. He was born in Englewood, CO on November 13, 1984 to Donald and Kathleen (Benson) Day. David moved with his family in April 1998 from Colorado to Gaylord. He was a 2003 graduate of Gaylord High School. David really enjoyed hockey and had served as co-captain for the Otsego County Recreational Hockey team. On October 6, 2009, he married Nicole Makins, who survives. A true patriot, David always wanted to be in the military and enlisted right after graduating from high school. He had served two tours in Iraq before being deployed to Afghanistan in November 2010. Before his most recent deployment, he had been stationed out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. In addition to his wife, Nicole, David is survived by his parents, Don and Kathy; sister, Samantha Day; grandparents, Janice and Pirie Benson of Gaylord, and Grace Day of Missouri; mother- and father-in-law, Robert (Patricia) Makins and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Arthur Day. FUNERAL SERVICES will be held on Friday, May 13, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. from the Gaylord Evangelical Free Church. VISITATION at the Nelson Funeral Home will be held on Thursday (May 12) from 2-7 p.m. Visitation on Friday (May 13) will be held at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Staff Sgt. Day may be made to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF) http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/daveday/SpecialOperationsWarriorFoundation “For over three decades, the SOWF has provided all-expenses-paid college scholarships to the children of Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps special operations personnel killed during operations or training. They also send overnight financial assistance to severely wounded special operations personnel, which allows these warriors' family members to be with their hospitalized loved ones as they begin the recovery process.
