Blog Entry: 2012 My Mountain News 0531 Welcome home, dear hearts, welcome home Get out here on the porch, grab a cuppa and a rocker and enjoy the quiet...Well, I do hear an owl down the holler but no singing from the coyote/wolves up the holler. I do miss the Newbie's sing songs...I was allowed to sing too... lolol Six dogs, at the time, and one gravelly voiced (me) human... In the house, howling for all we were worth. And then, the Newbie would dance with the MOM when he came back in the house. A little bit of the bunny hop and a lot of un-named dance steps. What a wonderful way to start any day. Looks like the News is gonna be about the critters today. Overnite!!!! The middle of the night, Stormy and Moose Foot started throwing 'alarm' fits. Earlier in the day, Anna warned me to lock the doors. Weird feller, subject to violent and explosive type activities. He got away from his folks and is now wandering the hills and hollers... any time of the day/nite. OK, so I lock doors. This means that everytime a critter wants out, I must get up and go open the back door. Now, the dogs want out. I let them out... and as I said, the Storm and the Moose are on the back porch having a hissy fit. I bellow... they quiet down for a few... then off they go again. I grab the .38, go to the porch in the dark to listen. Nothing. I watch the dogs.. Nada on looking in a particular direction... I come back inside. Now, the dogs are throwing hissies in the kitchen near the back door. Grab the pistol again. Out the door I go. Nothing again. But this time, I catch a small movement from the corner of my eye. I turn the porch lite on. Lo and behold, there between the tall cabinet (used as a windbreak) and the wall was the cutest lil 'possum. Teen-ager maybe? In possum years. Scared to death...sopping wet from the rain. What in the world was it doing on the deck? Did the dogs bring it up or did it come up looking for food? So now I am sitting here in the apartment (minding my own business) pondering. I'm quite aware of the dangers inherent in having wild ones visit. However, it was following it's normal pattern of behaviour... and what is one more small mouth to feed? I've lived in this house for what? Maybe 6 years? Seven? Heck, I don't know. But, I will say I've had an odd collection of critters show up at one time or another. Let's see... a huge snapping turtle, a young male raccoon, an elk across the road, a mountain lion and her cub, black snakes ( one inside the house in the bedroom doorway, two or three out back) An all black wooly worm in the drive way (this week), a squirrel, a Mocking bird who is learning to whistle the Streets Of Loredo. I've seen a bear cub... had a Bobcat cross the road right in front of me. Seen deer, turkey. Run my own 'Tarpin' (turtle/terrepin) rescue league. Tarpin is what they call the Box turtle down here. Here in the mountains, Box turtles will cross the roads on rainy days. Roads are a lot cooler... Depending on who's driving, Tildy, the pick-up, stops... I get out...grab turtle and throw it in the back. When I get home, turtle goes into the outdoor pen. Dogs can't get to it and it can escape under the fence, over the hill out back and into the woods. WARNING here. NEVER run over a turtle if it can be avoided. The shell can destroy your tires! And finally, speaking of animals, guess who sent the following email:THE TICKS ARE BAD AGAIN THIS YEAR. HEED THIS WARNING! Please send this warning to everyone on your e- mail list. If someone comes to your front door saying they are checking for ticks due to the warm weather and asks you to take your clothes off and dance around with your arms up, DO NOT DO IT!! THIS IS A SCAM!! They only want to see you naked. I wish I'd gotten this yesterday... I feel so stupid. Wooooohooooo.... Gotcha Marv! lolol Take care all of mine. Go in safety always. Remember that good friends always know what button to push to get you laffing... Many hugs, much love and please, lots of laffter every day... meems
