The annual Battle of the Streets motorbike races had to be closed early yesterday after several crashes, in which participants were injured. One of them died later in hospital. This appears to be the only recorded fatality since the event was started in 1991. The circuit is carefully laid out with bales of hay at strategic points where participants are likely to fall of their bikes, and I don't mean a couple of bales; they reach to 8ft high and are stacked on all the corners. I was always riding my bike, that presented no problem, and I could decipher most handwriting, which applied to nearly all the Christmas mail. I wa... Read More
