Our first day in Tonga was what we called The Waiting Day. Having successfully negotiated the Tongan Customs, we were offered a taxi which we turned down, because our package deal included being met by our hosts from Atata Island. It soon became evident that they were not there, when everyone had gone except one taxi driver who took us under his wing, although we were insisting that we had no Tongan money, and in any case we had paid for our transportation. The taxi driver took us to the Inte... Read More
Go and take a look at the iron pyrites clay, they told us. Iron pyrites clay? Who wants to look at that! The Old Salt was very old, just a tiny little man with a whopping personality and charisma, and he had a lfetime of boat-building behind him. Many of the deep-sea big game fishing boats in New Zealand’s favourite fishing spot at the Bay of Islands in Northland, were... Read More
We were members of the local Sports Club. I had never imagined that I would join a sports club. I believed myself to be the least athletically-gifted person in the world. I had a host of unpleasant memories in connection with my enforced participation in a variety of sports, such as basketball (now called netball), softball, running, and all other field events. All my life I had deliberately dodged any kind of sporting activity. Then I met sports-mad Lyn, who was a former rugby rep, former ju... Read More
