We were on a mission to find the graves of some of Lyn's family, which his children in Melbourne Australia requested, in connection with a Family Tree they are working on. We thought these graves were in a place called Te Arai, and on the way there we stopped at the Wellsford Cemetery and found some of them in there. I am not posting photos of graves in my NOTH gallery, and we didn't get much else in the way of photos. We still wanted to go to the Te Arai Cemetery, where some of the oth... Read More
THE PIG TRAIL called this because our state mascot is the big red razorback pig Talk about a difference in people based on where and how they were raised. A stretch of road called The Pig Trail, (yes it is, I'm not making that up) winds up a very crooked and hilly area just up the road from me. Now it is paved nicely. There is a Lodge on the top that is beautiful and draws people from all over the USA. I went there twice to a Ladies retreat. The Pig Trail is the only way to get... Read More
New Zealand is currently infested with crazy car drivers, to the danger of those who stick to the road rules. The winding road, lined with pohutukawa trees, follows the coastline all the way, and provides a beautiful sea view that changes with the weather. The pohutukawa trees are not yet flowering, but in December they will be ablaze with their famous red flowers, making them a world-renowned New Zealand icon. Today’s trip reminded me of something I participated in when I was 19, and leaves me staggered at the very thought of s... Read More
Mention “Blackberry” today, and people think of smart phones. To me, the word conjures up yet another happy memory from my distant past. New Zealand today bears little resemblance to the New Zealand of sixty or seventy years ago. Most of the country was farmland, and our export products were butter, meat and wool. They still are, to a more limited extent. Farming is no longer the lucrative industry that it used to be. Although my family were town dwellers, we still had access to numerous... Read More
