When we first moved out here on our 40 acres, rabbits were everywhere. I got my 800 trees planted and the war began. It was the rabbits or my trees. So we got rid of the rabbits. It took a couple years to catch them and drop them off a long ways away. However, they came back. We had to approach it another way. So we bought wire fencing. I got some of my trees in the fencing. it worked perfect. But now, I had a problem. Most of my trees were too far apart to fence them in. I decided to fence each one individually. That's just what I did. But this time I used Chicken wire, small chicken wire. Made tiny fences around each tree and to this day still working on it. Now, if the rabbits want to use our 40 acreas as their home, they are welcome to do so. Just this last winter when there was no food to be had due to all the snow, my hubby and I brought lettuce, carrots, squash and rabbit food from the store. ha ha ha!! We didn't want to see them starve to death. As a result, we are now proud owners of about 12 of them. They stay here cause they know they are protected from the cats and dogs of the neighbors. We scare them off if they come on our property. Living way out here is easy to see them coming. So we are ready for them if they try and chase or hurt "our" rabbits. Ha ha! Here are a few pictures so you can see how cute they are.
They hide under our sheds or under our bushes that are starting to grow. They don't eat pine trees or shrubs so I don't fence them. Just the other day, well, maybe a week or more ago, one of the mama rabbits needed a place to have her babies. Can you believe, she dug a hole right by our cement walk way in the front yard. Dug the hole and filled it with grass she dug up from the back of the house. Here is a picture of her huddled up on top of her hut she dug for her to have babies in.
Sure enough today was so nice and warm, she left the hole uncovered so the babies could feel the warmth I think. So we took a quick peek at them and I snapped a couple pictures. Hope you can see them. Here they are.
