Happy Father's Day to the men who are being remembered at this time.
It isn't Father's Day in NZ, but tomorrow is the 43rd anniversary of my father's death at nearly 73. His four children all had a longer life than his, and we cherish his memory and often recall his brilliant wit, his singing, his craftsmanship, and the true gentleman that he was.
He was a first World War British soldier, who emigrated to New Zealand after the war, bringing with him a great supply of old English sayings, songs and customs. The 6th of 15 children, my father and 5 of his brothers were all soldiers and all survived the war, albeit some of them as prisoners. This large family all achieved the age of 70, and my father's life was the the shortest but one.
He has been gone from my life longer than he was in it, and left an indelible mark that will never be erased.
Father's Day for us is in September, but we don't need that to remember this unique man. We speak of him often, 43 years down the track. My two sisters and I still cling to the memories our father left us with, as did our late brother.
Happy Sunday, America!
Barb.
