Today I thought I would take you to the Rangeland Derby at the Calgary Stampede, better known as the Chuckwagon Races. It is still my favorite event, even though there are some who want it to be banned. (They are the ones who don't know what they are talking about!)
My interest started when I was very young because a well-known Alberta family in Chuckwagon racing were neighbors of my parents when we lived on the farm. I think it is now the fourth generation who have been racing at the Calgary Stampede and many other rodeos. It is an exciting event, held in the early evening after the infield events, such as bull riding, bucking horses, wild cow milking etc.
... I didn't know what a chuckwagon was, or that they are pulled by a team of 4 horses. The accompanying horsemen puzzled me, I couldn't figure out what their function was. ... Barb.
Barb, There certainly is some danger in the races, considering the speed and congestion on the track. All the horses are race horses, and well cared for by the ranchers, but, unfortuneately, as in any sporting event, accidents do happen.
Because you were asking about the extra riders and their functions, I am posting a link that will show that there are many factors in the race that help to determine the final outcome.
To learn more about the history of the races, Wikipediahas extensive coverage. This is certainly not a new sport, and was initiated by the rancers themselves.
All events are interesting, exciting etc.. my fav is the bull riding lol.. I feel terrible whenever there is an accident involving animals. I don't want to see the Stampede banned, however, I would like to see events handled a tad differently so that injuries to animals are at zero tolerance. But that can't happen, would be nice tho. I don't watch the Chuck wagon race. But do the others.. Have a happy, happy evening..
