Computer Woes!
Posted On 08/28/2020 22:58:09 by yourchoice

It has been quite a week… and it seems that my computer took control of much of my time. Not really, but knowing that I’m always anxious to learn (or ‘relearn’) something on my computer, this was a new experience. I’ve been hooked on computer technology since the early 1980s.

To describe my present computer, which I purchased almost two years ago,it will help to understand the event. It is a 15" HP computer that is a tablet with a full keyboard that is attached with magnets; my preference now that my office has changed size from a full basement suite, to my favorite chair near the large window where I can enjoy the view of our 'green valley’. This week, when I checked my messages and emails first thing in the morning, I noticed that the computer screen had come out of the frame at the left lower area and it seemed somewhat warped. Why?

I called the company who sold the computer to me and described the situation. I was told to turn off the computer and not use it until I could bring it in to them. When they had a look at it, it took about 30 seconds to figure out the problem... the battery had heated, expanded, and pushed out the screen. I was fortunate that I had reported it quickly because there didn't seem to be any damage to the screen. When he told me what would have contributed to this problem, I was amazed and was not aware of the danger. I had always kept my computer plugged in to the power source, and just had it "sleep" when I wasn't using it. Apparently, because the operating hardware is all in the tablet, and should be plugged in only until it is fully charged, and reconnect when notified that it needs to be recharged.

I don't remember ever hearing that before, and I'm thinking there may be others who would be interested because a 'laptop' is not always the kind that was first introduced to the retail market. This information may be helpful to you and/or your friends too.

Thank you so much dear Mona, for sharing your knowledge about fixing a simple computer problem.  My brother always fixed my computer  your Blog helped a lot.  Have a nice day and take care.   Hugs

I'm so happy the information is of help. There always seems to be more things that we can learn. The information isn't for all laptops, only the ones that have a screen that converts to a tablet, with all the working parts behind the screen, and not under the keyboard.

Wow you're lucky. It could have been a whole lot worse.
I never heard that before either, just plugging it in until fully charged. Very strange.

It did sound strange until they made sure that I understood that the advise wasn't for all laptops, only the ones that had a screen like a tablet. I then realized that all of the 'working' components of my computer were with the the screen, and not under the keyboard. If I take the screen of my computer away from the keyboard, there is an keyboard on my screen and fully operational... because the battery, the memory card, the hard drive are all behind the screen. My husband understood it better then I did, because he deals in a variety of batteries that are not associated with a computer; his are for his tools, his vehicles, and his telephones.

I leave the fixing of my computer to the online services of Darcy and TC, ever since they began doing remote control, and have never yet been let down. I haven't encountered any hardware problems that required taking the computer to a serviceman, which would be a major problem where I live. I still use a PC and don't possess any devices, I prefer my keyboard and mouse. Your experience is timely for most people,  good on you for pasing on the information.

I'm with you, Barb, I prefer my PC because I still prefer to type with eight fingers and two thumbs. Trying to type with two thumbs on my phone is impossible, and barely do-able with one pointy finger!!! I am always amazed at the online services of TC and EB, and as you have said, have never been disappointed in what they do to keep things running well. I have passed on my 'hardware' woes to them, and it was new to them too. There seems to always something to learn... for everyone!

So, I need to unplug my laptop and only plug it in to recharge it?  Boy, I have had it plugged in continually except when I took it with me a couple of times.  Yikes.  I notice the screen is not quite so bright when I 'unplug' it.  Oh, well.  Live and learn.  Thanks for sharing.

Only if your laptop is like a tablet, with and the working 'parts' behind the screen instead of under the keyboard. You are just fine if your laptop is the "regular" kind that we all had for years. What I learned is that if you can take the screen off of the keyboard, and work on it as a tablet, that is when you need to plug it in only when the charge is low. No need to think that you need to change what you have been doing.
