A MILLION TIMES AGO

A MILLION TIMES AGO

I found an old church abandoned that showed years of neglect,
But I'm sure she knew the good ole' days of honor and respect,
She was sort of leaning there with a large hole in her side,
And was aged from all the weather, but standing yet with pride.
Her beams and rafters torn apart, looked like a war went through,
Weeds and brush all threatened the life of flowers new,
I stepped inside to look around and see what I could see,
I thought my very heart would break down inside of me.
I couldn't keep from crying when I saw what had been done,
Someone's trashed your house Lord, is this what they call fun?
Paint was sprayed all over and songbooks torn to shreds,
The little "welcome" doormat has long been worn to threads.
The curtains from the alter that were all once velvet gold,
Now are piled in a corner all decayed from rot and mold,
Broken glass is strung all over, dirty words carved on the wall,
Signs of waste and garbage, now line the darkened hall.
In the little nursery that the babies all slept in,
Now is filled with bottles, that once held wine and gin.
A nest of mice are living in a broken rocking chair,
Where someone rocked the babies with tender loving care.
Keys of ivory and ebony lay scattered on the floor,
And someone made a fire Lord out of the old oak door,
Walls are hushed by silence that must have rang with praise,
She was a mighty fortress back in her younger days,
I turned to leave, then saw you there with both arms open wide,
Someone took a knife Lord and slashed right through your side.
Your picture hung upon that wall, nails held you there in place,
And someone made a dartboard out of your precious face.
As I took you down so carefully, I was sure they didn't know,
That you'd been through this all before, a million times ago!
