Just thought I'd share this little story with you. Hope it makes you smile

Two weeks ago on Saturday morning, I went to Dickie Bird's cage to take his cover off ready for the new day.  It has been a very cold winter here in Tasmania.  To my distress, the little fella was on the bottom of the cage, looking like he was going to depart this world any minute.  I put the cover back on the cage to let nature take its course.  I have always had budgies and know that this is the way it happens.

Ten minutes later, I hear a noise and the little guy had climbed up to his perch, but his head was upside down and it looked frightful.  I didn't want him to suffer of course, so I rang the Vet and to my surprise, he asked me to bring him straight down.  In 20 years of knowing this man (and nearly owning the practice!!), I never knew he was a bird lover.

He happened to have been given a "warming cage", saying we would give the little man a chance and see what happened.  I was told to ring the next morning (Sunday).  Fully expecting to be told that Dickie had passed away during the night, I rang and actually said "don't tell me, I know he's gone".  To my utter amazement, Bob the Vet, said that Dickie was sitting up eating and drinking!!  It appears that this little bird had suffered Hypothermia......well blow me down; I'd never heard that before.

Needless to say, he is back home, looking great, talking his head off and being a real lunatic.

Each day I approach the cage with trepidation, but every extra day he is here is an absolute blessing....the dear little thing.

Long live Dickie Bird

Good for Dickie Bird!  I used to have budgies, so I know what you mean about recognizing their time to go.  Very sad indeed.  I am so glad that your wee feathered baby pulled through, and I hope you have several wonderful years with him!

I can remember when I was a child that our warming cage was the oven. My dad and uncle decided that we would get rich [actually uncle thought] by raising chickens. I can remember him bringing them in and putting them in the oven to warm them when it got to cold for some. No we never got rich.

Wow -- what a fantatic story.  I'm so glad that Dickie Bird is okay.  We over our budgie (Smudgie) with two blankets in the winter and I still worry that he'll be warm enough!  Every morning when I take the covers off, he greets me with:  Hello Sweetheart, followed by a wolf whistle!  What's not to love.   I repeat -- LONG LIVE DICKIE BIRD.

Hope you are well.....Ros.

I'm so pleased there was a happy outcome. I love my birds, and I am fully aware that at 21, 21 and 20 time is running out. I spoil them rotten, they are cockatiels, and we alredy lost one that we had for 18½ years, not knowing how old she was when we got her. I hope your wee budgie has a few more years left, you're lucky the vet was alert and helpful. Good luck!
