Our Freeware Pick Of The Week

Quick Media Converter (QMC)
An audio and video media file converter
25.68 MB Windows Zip File
A few long hours download time for dialup users (Not recommended!)
One to five minutes for broadband users
Windows XP and Windows Vista

There are automobile converters, religious converters, and scam converters like Eightball - who once tried to sell me a machine that turned tin cans into gold. Luckily, I didn't buy it because I'm always wary of things Eightball tells me!

Anyway, rather than rambling on about the nefarious ways of Eightball, let me get right to the point. Don't laugh! I'm going to!

If you work with audio or video files you know that many times you need to convert a file from one extension to another. And, NO NO NO you cannot right click and just type in a new file extension, it doesn't work that way! You must convert the file using a converter. If you just change the extension without converting the file to the proper format - a bunch of things are going to happen and all of them are bad, bad, bad!

Microsoft used to make a great media converter and gave it away free. I guess Vista was selling so poorly that now they sell their media converter and I said "no thanks" because it wasn't very user friendly when it was free, but it did work very well. Now, you can just imagine the junk they added to it to beef it up so that they could sell it to you.

Anywhale, all that being said, really good media converters that can convert audio and video files from one format to another are becoming as rare as the Yellow-horned European rhinoceros - which, if you live in Europe, you already know too well, is very rare!

The Quick Media Converter web site is a lawyer's dream, meaning it is convoluted and confusing. But! There are audio and video resources that tell you all about the program, how to use it, why to use, when to use it, and why it's free.

You can convert almost every imaginable media file type with this program (including iPod and iPhone files) and the support for the program looks like it should be excellent, since it's done on a forum question/answer basis, and the developer seems to follow-up on questions frequently. Plus, with the tutorials he offers and the simplicity of the program, you should have no problem learning how to use it. Famous last words :)

If you have need to convert audio or video files and you don't have a program to convert them, then this is your lucky day, indeed. Because despite the heavy workload laid upon my aging shoulders by none other than Eightball, I have found time to find you the best free media converter I've yet tried.

Without further bloviating or, as we like to say in the meandering business "yammering", I herewith present you with this week's Freeware Pick Of The Week - Quick Media Converter (QMC) - a freeware program extraordinaire. It will convert you...
