I just heard on The Today Show of a Chimp attacking a friend of the owner.   The lady had the Chimp since he was 3 days old....shot to death at 14 years of age.   The Chimp knew this person quite well, but said in the 911 call, he was ripping her face off. The lady is in critical condition!!   The owner didn't know what caused him to attack, she tried beating him with a shovel and then stabbed him with a knife.  He looked at her as if to say  "Why did you do that mom?"   The police did come and shot him to death.   It was a bittersweet moment for the owner, as she may be criminally charged.   The Chimp was kind of a star in his own right, did some Old Navy commercials.  He liked to drive and had taken his owners car a couple of times.    Here is a news article from the INTERNET....

STAMFORD, Conn. – Travis the chimpanzee, a veteran of TV commercials, was the constant companion of a lonely Connecticut widow who fed him steak, lobster and ice cream. He could eat at the table, drink wine from a stemmed glass, use the toilet, and dress and bathe himself.

He brushed his teeth with a Water Pik, logged on to a computer to look at photos and channel-surfed television with the remote control.

But on Monday, the wild animal in him came out with a vengeance.

The 200-pound animal viciously mauled a friend of his owner before being shot to death by police.

Investigators are trying to figure out why — whether it was a bout of Lyme disease, a reaction to drugs, or a case of instinct taking over.

"It's hard to say what exactly precipitated this behavior," said Colleen McCann, a primatologist at the Bronx Zoo. "At the end of the day, they are not human and you can't always predict their behavior and how they or any other wild animal will respond when they feel threatened."

Travis attacked 55-year-old Charla Nash as Sandra Herold frantically stabbed her beloved pet with a butcher knife and pounded him with a shovel. Nash was in critical condition Tuesday with "life-changing, if not life-threatening," injuries to her face and hands, Mayor Dannel Malloy said.

Police said they are looking into the possibility of criminal charges. A pet owner can be held criminally responsible if he or she knew or should have known that an animal was a danger to others.

It is a shame that this has to happen to animals. When will we learn that they are WILD animals no matter how long we have had them. They cannot tell us what is happening in their bodies when we treat them with meds, etc. Even humans loose control and commit horrible crimes, but they could tell someone where it hurts or what a certain med does to us. Animals must just suffer in silence and then when it gets unbearable they loose control and strike out. such a sad situation. Suzan

Anything in which there is a defect you must not present.—Lev. 22:20.
A fundamental standard concerning any animal that was to be sacrificed to Jehovah was that it be “sound” in all respects—not blind, injured, deformed, or sick. (Lev. 22:21, 22) When the Israelites offered fruits or grains to Jehovah, they needed to be “the very best” of their harvests. (Num. 18:12, 29) A second-rate offering was not acceptable to Jehovah. The important requirement regarding animal sacrifices pictured that Jesus’ sacrifice would be spotless and unblemished and that Jehovah would sacrifice what was best and dearest to him in order to redeem mankind. (1 Pet. 1:18, 19) The person making a sacrifice knew that God would not be pleased with a defective offering because that would indicate that the man considered the sacrifice a mere formality, even a burden. (Mal. 1:6-8, 13)

This is not the way wild animals ought to be treated. Drinking wine for goodness sake from a glass. Were the owners trying to make a substitute human. Human beings go off the rails and attack people and don't get put down unless they killed them.

The animals obviously has been mistreated all its life, even doing commercials it would have been mistreated some what.

One day it was going to come out, and here you are.

As I was driving home with my dog in the back > Got to thinking how awful it would be for me to have to have to stab my dog to stop him  from harming someone. Almost like one of my family. What an awful choice that woman had to make and you know that the animal would look at her not understanding why. so very sad all the way around. How many of us have had to put a pet to sleep and cried for days?

I first learned of this horrible tragedy on a FM radio talk show in the morning, and they were playing the actual 911 call. Oh my goodness! At first I wasn't sure what I was listening to, and then I couldn't believe what I was hearing. All I could say is "Oh My Goodness", over and over.  How horrible to have your pet maul your friend, and not be able to stop it, or help! Both of them will relive that day over and over again, and the burdens that the owner has now got to carry with her over both the friend & animal. Of course how can your heart not break for the friend. Her life as she knew it, is now gone, and the hurt must be so deep, it'll probably scar forever. I know I will be praying for her daily.  Very sad.
