Twitter Widget Appears Solid Black on My Page

Has anyone else run into a problem with their Twitter Widget reverting to a solid black box. I've had it happen several times.  I have logged the problem on their support section and got a confirmation back also saying they are backlogged.

At one time I turned 'Protect my updates' off and back on and that *seemed* to work LOL.  At least the widget was visible again. So I posted an update to that effect and the next time I checked, the widget was back to a solid black box.

As well as logging this with their support, I googled and found someone else with the same problem showing up on Getsatisfaction.com (whatever that is  )  But right now, "I can't get no satisfaction!"

It will eventually sort itself out.  I think all my apps like Flash and Shockwave are up to date.  I've deleted and reinstalled the widget completely as well although I didn't expect that to solve this problem.

I'm hoping it's just something related to their growing pains and not something stupid I'm doing.  We shall see.

Hi Monkey Butt!

Well I thought that too, but I have had it go black after it's been visible with no new activity/updates to cause it to need to update itself.   Sometimes doing a refresh will work, other times it stays a solid black box for a long time.   I guess if I had nothing but time on my hands I'd watch it enough to see a pattern.

I do suspect it does have something to do with traffic loads - or maybe not.

I just thought I post about it in case others were wondering if my life was just one big black hole. LOL

Yes, I was disappointed this morning to see my Widget solid black.  I've come to this page to ask for help.  There is one thing I can think of is that I did a lot of 'cleaning' of my computer yesterday.  Maybe tha baby went out with the bathwater!!  I think I will try to delete and install it again and then see what happens.  Anyone with any other ideas gratefully received. the black widget has nothing to do with traffic; it is not run from our server. it has to do with both of your profile pages having either way too much code/widgets/flash or a badly made flash code. I am going to guess it is the flip album/slide show as you both have one or more of those on your page, its not a good code (just the way its made), it is a bit intrusive and probably conflicting with the widget for twitter.

We recommend not using those flip album/slide shows as they cause so many problems. And, we recommend limiting the number of widgets/flash on a page.

One of your pages has:

 2 flash objects in color
flash and another widget in favorite food
animated cursor
slideshow under books
several widgets/flash/objects in news and announcements
more flash and widgets under about me

That is way too much and high chance for conflict, especially on a changing widget such as twitter. We highly recommend not using animated cursors as cause many intermittent problems.

Hope this helps you both. Start off by removing one or more of the objects until page looks as it should

Hi EB.

It's time to clean up some of those widgets anyway , so I have started with the slide.com one and removing it made no difference.  I'll eventually clean up some others, one at a time.

Then I remembered I had a test account, 'biddy-sandbox', which I use for trying to learn CSS layouts, (fun but challenging for this old brain). So I popped the Twitter widget into the Twitter box in that account's profile and got the same results.  And the Twitter widget code is the only code that is in any of the profile boxes in this account.  Very strange! .

I typically use Firefox to view that account so this gremlin doesn't seem to be browser related.

I still have lots to learn about Twitter, so will keep cleaning up my main page and maybe eventually the black box issue will get solved.   I sure don't want to waste anyone's time on it.  I've logged it with their support yesterday and since others have experienced it, in time it will get worked out or understood at least.

In the meantime, it has prompted me to look at my page and see what junk I should think about cleaning up.

Thanks again EB.

Hugs,

Biddy

go and get a new twitter code.. and, you didn't happen to change your twitter name after you signed up did you? I just thought about that, and that would cause the old one not to work.

Ok, we might be on to something here... i see you did change your name Biddy, and so I checked someone else who had changed their Twitter name.. and guess what? She has black box too. If you change your name, your twitter code has to be redone .... that should get you fixed up!

"However, maybe it will be much different being a "Twillian", so I changed my original username to HillBiddy since someone had already taken 'Biddy' on Twitter (the nerve of some people  )  "

Polly changed her twitter name and is seeing black as well, so she needs to redo hers with new name too

found this, looked at Lillians, and her widget is black.. so maybe this is the problem:  Yesterday I changed my Twitter User Name from Lil1940 to LilianC when I found that it was not  already taken - Lilian was.  That way it's closer to my NOTH name. Of course I have a widget :o)

Your updates are not giving away anything personal; not really any reason to do it.

I dropped by to check in on you, I noticed that you have your layout code applied "6" times in your advanced coding.  Like you had applied the layout six different times without deleting the previous coding.

You actually have

body {background-image: url(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v119/DiOntario/NOTH/Irish_1280x910_BG.jpg); border: none; background-attachment: fixed; background-repeat: repeat; background-position: center;font-family:Trebuchet MS;font-weight:bold;} /*BACKGROUND-BORDER-PAGE FONT STYLES*/

applied six times throughout the coding, most if not all the other coding following that is duplicated six times also.

Good grief.  Now how embarrassing is that!!  I'd like to blame it on Walter, the kitty who does help at times with some editing, but even he is much smarter than that!    The notepad text file itself was royally messed up, 5 times it's normal size LOL.  I'm not even going to try to figure out what might have happened.   I can see how I could fly through a cut and paste and mess up, but having it repeated so many times in the file seems like I had a convulsion of some sort!!

I typically save a new version of the file after I try/change something, so I just reverted to the previous version of the file.  I hope it's looks a bit more normal.

I'm so sorry and glad you picked it up.  It's amazing that the page didn't blow up.  LOL    And even the Twitter code was working OK with all those duplicate CSS lines in there.  That's pretty forgiving code.

Thanks Shell.

I'm definitely laying off the guinness as of this minute.  Maybe I should give up playing with CSS too.
