Are there any Clematis fans on the forum?

I have about a dozen different varieties, some paired with roses and some on their own trellis.  I think I added about 6 new ones this year and have absolutely run out of room now (I think   ) We live right in the city but luckily our yard is entirely fenced which is great for adding trellises for roses and clematis.

A great website for Clematis is this one which also includes links to others websites, one other that I have found very helpful so I'll list it as well.

Until about 3 years ago, I never paid much attention to clematis and never dreamed there were so many varieties.  It's hard to pick a favorite.  Of the ones I planted this year, I think Doctor Ruppel is the one I'm most anxious to see, but it's such a wee thing yet, doing well though climbing on it own trellis.

Anyone else have a favorite or two or three .

Hi Biddy,

I have several clematis.  I don't remember the names of most of them.  One might be your Dr. Ruppel though.  The top one is called Blue Moon.

Almabirdie, the last one looks like a Nelly Moser. I have one just like it. I have another that is suppose to be purple but it's a very light lavender. I wonder if the soil needs some sulphur to brighten up the flowers. I love clematis but don't have room for more than the two I have.

I agree, the last Clemetis looks like Nelly Moser.  I love Clemetis, have only four and two don't blossom that well.  I don't get enough sunshine though.

Oh Wow!  Pat that one is so pretty and healthy looking and such a lovely shade.  Do you know it's name?   Mine are just starting to open.  All the others above are lovely also.  There are so many things to do with them.  I'm just beginning to learn.  I think I really like the look of them all by themselves on some type of trellis of post, but I do have most on trellis against fences and some with roses.  We will see what works best.  'Tis the fun of gardening, isn't it?

The clematis photos are wonderful.  Is that a plant you have had for a while?  Mine don't get the sun they would like.  I forgot to mention I have another variety called Avante Garde.  It hasn't bloomed yet, but I hope it will give me a show later in the summer.  You may want to look it up and see how interesting it is.  Kathie:  I do need to fertilize.  I will use some high sulphur fertilizer to kick up the flowers.

I have Avante Garde, several in fact.  It is a pretty clematis but I was surprised at how tiny the flowers were.  I had them planted on either side of two different trellises with Don Juan climbing roses at the side of the garden shed.

Gee, I seem to never do anything right the first time around.  The clematis grew like crazy and almost overtook the entire trellis.  I then decided the two colors sort of clashed.  So this spring I moved the clems to pots and they are thriving but they have a very stiff upright stem so I'm not sure a pot is where they belong.  Pieces are still popping up in their old spots, so they are very hardy little flowers - very different, but tiny.  I found often the store labels don't provide enough details about the plants.  But if gardening didn't have it's surprises, then it wouldn't be as much fun.

Some times these mystery plants add nice 'intrique' to the garden, LOL.  You have the plant if not it's name and such a gorgeous one it is!!

I have a couple of rose bushes that were mislabled, one I'm almostsure I've identified online but another one I ordered as a Lambert Closse turned out to be a lovely red rose, so I know I got a different rose.  I love it though and it will soon open so I'll send some pics to the nursery (an out of town/online nursery which I've used often) and maybe they will identify it.  Even the foliage is pretty with the new leaves a nice crimson.

I'm sure that pretty picture of your clematis will prompt other to think about planting some of these pretty plants.  I only started a few years ago and I understand there are thousands of different varieties.

Hugs,

Biddy
