I thought it was not coming out till October, but at any rate, I will keep my Vista till it either dies on me or MS stops supporting it.

It is tempting to install, but with the information given by TC I think I will hold on to my W7 for now. I heard through the grape vine that MS may already be looking towards W9.

It's not too different from Windows 7. One nice point: it already contains an antivirus (what used to be Microsoft Security Essentials) so you don't need to add a separate one.

I got W8 when I was forced to replace my dead XP.  Hated it at first, but then discovered the desktop view, which many things work better on anyway, it seems.  I'm sure people who have and use the touch screen stuff will like it just fine as is, but I'm not the least bit interested in touch screen anything. My stepson keeps trying to get me interested in using his IPad whenever he comes for a visit but about all I'll do on it is play a mah johng game he downloaded for me (I don't want to hurt his feelings).....I don't know if he's hoping I'll ask for one for Xmas for what (that's something he'd love to buy me, I'm sure).......but it's just not something I'm interested in using....(don't want a Kindle, either, which disappoints him no end........lol)

I got a free year of McAfee with my Dell, which I'll just go ahead and use, I guess, but prefer the free Avast I was using to be honest, so definitely won't renew.  The free Avast plus Advanced System Care (which I think I heard about here, as I recall) have done a great job for me on my old machine.  I even upgraded to the paid version of ASC.  Loaded it on my new machine and use it every day as I shut down.  It keeps things cleaned up, defrags when needed and kept that old antique machine running smoothly longer than it probably would have, I'm sure.

As much as I'd have preferred to keep using XP forever, I've discovered I can actually live with this W8......lol.......not a big person for change so that's a big admission.  I will admit to feeling a bit safer online as I was getting nervous about losing support for XP.  I don't bank online but do shop sometimes.  I'm a pretty cautious online person anyway.........mostly go to places I know and very rarely follow a link unless I feel REALLY  secure about doing it.  No random browsing just for the fun of it for me. I know, I know, I don't use the internet to it's full potential, but I get what I want out of it and that's what's important to me.   I'd gone over to my neighbor's house to see about ordering the new computer and she put me on their old XP because it was hooked up to the printer, which was fine as I was able to print the specs of the machine I'd picked out........but I was a bit nervous about ordering with a credit card because she told me she hadn't allowed it to update for quite sometime because someone told her the computer would crash if she did.....(???).......anyway, I was almost relieved when for some reason the internet connection was lost and wouldn't come back.....I went on their new laptop, had all the info I needed and ordered feeling much more secure.

I do wish someone had warned me just how much different the W8 would be, though.  I went in a thread on here and asked people for comparisons and about all anyone said was to go for the latest.   I think I would not have panicked as much at first had I gone with W7, but oh well, I survived.

I love Windows 8. Yes, it takes a bit of getting used to, but since I had Windows7, it wasn't too hard.

As for 'anti-virus':  Windows 8 comes with its own...so you don't need MacAfee or anything else!  (yes, you still need Malwarebytes & SuperAntiSpyware, but no other anti-virus)

If you install a different anti-virus, you'll probably notice that Windows Defender is disabled.

PS--the Windows Defender is what used to be called MSE (microsoft security essentials) which TC/Cloudeight has recommended for some time now.  That's what I usd on my Vista &  Windows 7.
