Answer: Father's Day did not become an official U.S. holiday until 1972, when then-President Nixon issued a proclamation declaring the third Sunday in June as Father's Day in the United States.

I believe it's been celebrated since the early 1900's, but it wasn't official until Richarde Nixon made it an official day.
