How to Make a Pie Floater

A pie floater is quintessentially South Australian, after having retreated from the rest of Australia to remain strong in Adelaide and surrounds.[1] It is well known for being a source of sustenance at 3am in the morning after a night out... when one gets the munchies and anything filling will do. This dish is hearty and actually can be quite delicious provided the ingredients used are of good quality. Now that your curiosity is piqued, what is it? A pie floater consists of thick green pea soup, a pie upended in the soup and tomato sauce slathered all over the pie. Sounds like something you'd like to try?

[edit] Ingredients

  • Meat pie
  • Green pea soup
  • Tomato sauce (ketchup)

[edit] Steps

  1. Make a bowl of green pea soup.
  2. Make or purchase a meat pie.
  3. Drop the pie into the bowl of green pea soup. Try to centre it.
  4. Squirt tomato sauce all over the pie.
  5. Eat it hot. It's best to eat before the pie becomes too soggy.
  6. Dare a tourist friend to share. It makes for a great story that will be retold for years to come.

Hi Bess. It is so long since I have had one. And they were good. Do they still have the "Pie Van" in the city?  Patricia

Hi Patricia,

The Pie Cart is no longer in Adelaide, it was sold and is now at Murray Bridge or Tailem Bend.

The National Trust of Australia gave the pie floater the status of a South
Australian Heritage icon in the year 2003.

Bess.
