We're proud of South Australia's food and wine icons - the talented chefs,
impeccable winemakers, quirky food dishes and more - which have helped
make South Australia a surprising and delightful food and wine destination. Read
on for the things you must taste and the people you may meet ...

Haigh's
Chocolates

Haigh's Chocolate Factory is the oldest
family-owned chocolate manufacturer in Australia. Every item from the 200-strong
Haigh's range is created by hand, using only the finest ingredients to guarantee
its smooth, creamy texture and amazing flavour.

Coopers Brewery
The much-loved Coopers is Australia's only remaining family-owned brewer,
and the world's largest producer of home-brew beer concentrates. The company is
well known for its Coopers Sparkling Ale and Extra Stout.

Pie Carts
Adelaide pie carts have been around since 1915 and are
still tempting not-so-fussy eaters into the wee small hours of the morning. The
cart is most famous for it's pie floater - a meat pie turned upside down
in a bowl of green pea soup and topped with a lavish dollop of tomato sauce.

Balfours Frog
Cakes
Adelaide-based Balfours is the largest fresh
bakery in Australia. It is most famous for its cream and sponge frog cake. The original frog was covered with
a green fondant - pink, chocolate and white versions came later. Today Frog
Cakes are one of South Australia's most quirky food icons.

Penfolds Magill
Estate and Grange
Eight kilometres from the heart
of Adelaide, Magill Estate Winery is the spiritual home to the legendary
Penfolds wine brand. It is also home to the internationally recognised Penfolds
Grange, which is a South Australian icon. The winery hosts a range of daily
tours, including cellar door tastings.

Farmers Union Ice Coffee
The best-selling Farmers Unions Ice Coffee  is a South
Australian favourite. This flavoured milk drink was invented here and is still
made right here. Don't leave South Australia without trying some!

Ligurian Bees
The Ligurian Bee was introduced to Kangaroo
Island in 1884 and a year later the island was declared a Ligurian Bee
Sanctuary. Kangaroo Island remains home to the purest strain of bee in the
world. They produce a high quality honey, mostly exported interstate and
overseas. Originally sourced from the Italian province of Liguria.

King George
Whiting
It's fun to catch, easy to scale and fillet
and is great eating, especially with a fine South Australian wine. The famed King George Whiting is getting more elusive -
expensive to buy and harder to catch.

Bridgewater Mill
The Bridgewater Mill, nestled in the heart of the
Adelaide Hills, is the elegant home of Petaluma. The historic Mill houses a
world-renowned restaurant, the cellar door for Petaluma's famous wines, and the
cellars where the company's sparkling wines are made.

Menz FruChocs
Delicious Menz FruChocs have been putting smiles on the
faces of South Australians of all ages since the 1940s. Today more than 40
million FruChocs are produced each year. FruChocs are made by South Australia's
largest confectioner, Robern Menz, which also produces Menz Crown Mints and
Medlow Fruit Gels. They have centres of dried apricot and dried peach, and
they're coated with milk chocolate.

Bickford's Lime Cordial
Bickford's Lime Juice Cordial is an invention
from South Australia's pioneering past. The cordial's heritage label still
carries the signature AM Bickford & Sons, as it did in 1850. Today, this
refreshing Lime Juice Cordial can be found in many South Australian homes.

Golden North ice
cream
The tiny town of Laura in South Australia's
mid north is famous for the much-loved Golden North ice cream company. Proudly
local, cows from the region are used to produce delicious ice creams, yogurts
and sorbets with a creamy variety of flavours.

Legends
Cheong Liew
Malaysian-born Cheong Liew is the main chef at
Adelaide's renowned restaurant The Grange. He is a delightful, ebullient
personality who is routinely spotted shopping at the Adelaide Central Market. He
has been awarded an OAM - Medal of the Order of Australia - in recognition for
service to the food and restaurant industry.

1934, the company produce delicious nuts, chocolates, dried fruits, and
confectioneries. Since Brett and his brother Mark have taken over Charlesworth
Nuts, there are eight specialists stores across Adelaide, offering South
Australians the best and freshest nuts available.

passionate about the South Australian wine industry. Peter is a fifth generation
Barossa farmer and grape grower. The birth of Peter Lehmann Wines in the 1970s,
brought about a radical change in the South Australian market for white wine.

Australia in search of making a sparkling wine. Today, Wolf is a knowledgeable
wine expert and judge, winning numerous awards. Wolf has contributed enormously
to creating the reputation of Australian Wine internationally, and has helped

Dear Bess, Thanks for sharing this interesting account of wines, foods, chocolates, nuts, and many other delectable goodies manufactured in South Australia.  I haven't been to Adelaide, but some smart cookie should be doing tours around all these places - a Gourmet Wine and Food Trail!  Certainly lots to see and do and savour in South Australia.

LOVE AND PEACE, ANNIE THE AUSSIE.
