I have an ongoing problem.  For some reason, my computer will arbitrarily decided that it will not log on to windows.  I have XP service pack 2.  When I start it up, it will go to the welcome screen and log itself off.  When I click on my computer name to log on, it will again go to the welcome screen and log off.  I have tried starting in safe mode and it too will do the same thing.  So I have to do a full restore and go through all the hassle of deleting the junk that came with the computer and downloading apps again.  This has happened 3 times now.  I have run my anti-virus, spyware scan and chkdsk.  Does anyone know what is causing this and what I can do to make it stop.  There is no rhyme or reason to it that I can see.  I am about aggravated enough to use the sledgehammer option, but right now I can't afford it, lol.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Sometimes reboots for "no reason" can be the result of your memory.  Over time, it is possible for the memory chips to work loose, because of the expanding and contraction of the chips.  (even ever so slight).  Turn your computer off; allow it to cool (maybe 30 minutes); then remove and replace your memory chips.  While resetting the chips, also insure that all your cables are secure. While you are resetting your memory chips and  checking the cables, also using a can of compressed air, clean out any dust in the computer, power supply, etc.

I had the same situation as you a few years ago, and I did the above and it stopped.

The two most common reasons for this is virus (be sure your antivirus is updated) and a motherboard going bad (this can be caused by overheating).

Hi, try starting in safemode. Then run your anti-virus.

Eightball reminded me of a problem that I also had. My home is rather small and we had wood heat for awhile which is hard at time to regulate. I had a program that would warn me if my laptop got to hot. One day it went off I don't remember what the temp was, but fried motherboard would have resulted. I now have a fan that is made for laptop to sit on. Most people don't realize that the fans on your lap top draw in the outside air and if they are blocked our there is only HOT air to draw in a problem will arise. The fans are compact and fairly inexpensive I got mine at Wal-Mart. The TV will show people with their laptop just sitting on the bed being used, but that is an accident waiting no happen no way to cool the laptop. Vents blocked. Suzan
