Play Dough With a Difference

Go and take a look at the iron pyrites clay, they told us. Iron pyrites clay? Who wants to look at that!  Well, they had never put us wrong before, and they live here, we don’t, so let’s go an see this iron pyrites clay! Hey, come back here and get a hat, you can’t go out in that sun without hats on! The Old Salt always wore his Captain’s hat. Three of us borrowed one. The Old Salt for some reason known only to himself, was running around barefooted, and we had to walk for mil... Read More

The Kauri Dam

Great Barrier Island used to be regarded as the “back of beyond” that could only be reached after a long sea voyage, and there was nothing there when you got there. Modern transportation soon fixed that. Our arrival at Port Fitzroy proved that the whole world had not only heard of the place, they had arrived there in their thousands. Well, hundreds. Boats of every description and size littered the harbour, from little tin tubs to majestic multi-storey skite-boats. This was an exciting po... Read More

He had a camper van, otherwise known as a motor home, and (even at his advanced age) a girlfriend, whom we called The Mermaid. The pair of them took off in the camper van to the most northerly tip... Thunderstorm

Today is too hot, too humid, too strange, too oppressive. Only the tropical can suck this wet , hot air and be happy. Even the children are languid.

The subtle breeze that brought this summer is gone. Misty fields of spring are now overgrown with summer, its lushness of spreading crops, weeds, and strange dusty green things a weird an colorful enigma. The cold winter wind is a bitter broken memory and the scent of autumn can't wedge its way into the savage heart of this heat.

Porpoises and Craypots

A few weeks after the Old Salt’s launch, Popeye, was damaged on the rocks, it had to go for repair. The propeller shaft was bent, and although the boat could still be used to a limited extent, it wasn’t in perfect condition. The Old Salt was very old, just a tiny little man with a whopping personality and charisma, and he had a lfetime of boat-building behind him. Many of the deep-sea big game fishing boats in New Zealand’s favourite fishing spot at the Bay of Islands in Northland, were... Read More
