New Year Resolutions Don’t you just hate that word Resolutions? Every year we all are bombarded with magazines, news stories, tv shows that blast away about how we should do this and do that beginning January 2014. If it were all that easy and if we all really even did the proposed resolutions imagine the world, everyone would be stick slim, no one would be drug addicts, no tobacco usage and Lord knows the list could go on and on. It seems a set up for failure to me. Why if these things are so important would we wait an entire year to begin? Why would the entire world begin on the New Year? I don’t resolute one thing except to make a resolution that I won’t make a resolution! Give us a break, we all have common sense and know what we should do without the exteriors out there making all that money to try and shove it down our throat when they themselves are not great examples. Long live our health and happiness and common sense.
Time is moving too fast I endured our summer here in Virginia in 2013. The sweltering heat never arrived and in fact we were flooded with rain day after day and month after month. I am not a fan of rain even though WE must have it to survive but I was in a happy place because I was not sweating! Most of the time it seems that summer (especially with the heat) is so long and I patiently wait for the cool frosty Fall to arrive. Then Fall arrives with all its glory and bright colors that illuminate my very soul. I shuffle through the leaves and pick bright orange pumpkins in my neighbor’s garden. Warm sweaters and scarfs are carefully pulled from last winter’s storage and friends call to invite me to bonfires with marshmallows and hot chocolate. Hound dogs howl in the mountains as each hunters whistle for their special blue tick. There are so many harvests, picnics, and dinners going on to celebrate the affair of Fall. Then as quick as a thief in the darkness of night we awake to missing leaves and in their place is heavy frost. Winter is arriving and it too has its own bright splendor. There are snow men to be made and Christmas presents to buy and so much food that it’s almost sinful. Fires burn bright orange and send out warmth that draws the soul near. Puzzles and games are opened and families gather to witness the bond of quiet, peace and love. The harsh winds blow in from the north and icicles hand in pending doom, knowing that the sun will appear and melt the pristine winter soon. Then like a blink of an eye spring is already on its way and who knows what that will bring. Then we are back to full circle, summer. Summer has its special place, swimming holes in creeks that flow, picnics on mountain tops where the blackberries grow juicy and fish swimming in the cow ponds. Long hikes with friends to never ending green meadows with nature abound. I shudder to leave behind each season as each has so much to offer. Each has its own beauty and its own true story. As we soon say good bye to the Christmas season our hearts will be on valentines but no matter what season, God made them all and they all have a purpose and I for one will do my best to see the good and the happy in all of them.
Just sitting here watching a terrific fight between the wind and the rain. First the rain falls softly and then as the wind beats the rain against my window pane I see scattered tear drops lined up in layers on the glass. The rain begins again and falls steadily now and then I hear it, a knocking and beating sound as the wind catches its breath to batter up again. Who has the power, the wind or the rain? With both together are they a force to be reckoned with? Perhaps they are only involved as lovers who spat and make up and then turn on their own again. The sun smiled down yesterday as if to tease us or maybe perhaps to ready us for the taunting of today’s harsh reality. The kept promise that April showers bring May flowers remains on target. They sway and shake the rain from their petals and stand in awe as a tornado shoots right by. Soon the temperatures will soar above the nineties and heat loving people will fly out with sandals in one hand and sunscreen in the other. I, on the other hand will be wiping sweat from my brow, squinting into the blazing ball of fire and shaking my finger in fury like an episode from Gone With The Wind. As I moan and groan and speak my peace, mostly wishing for cool weather I seem to agitate fellow sun worshippers and they reply with a somewhat cruel mouth, “don’t say that”. I smile and at the same time I am stunned as I wonder why they think my words have so much power, as if all my wishing would make it so? The rain is continuing in spurts and plops , but I find it calming and satisfying and think I shall go read a good book, one about snow!
Winter is Over I dug deep in this winter as I pulled out my crocheted covers and soft blankets. My books were dusted off and arranged carefully on many side tables. The cabinets were full of hot chocolate mix and a steaming pot of soup boiled on the stove. I moved from window to window looking and longing for the first snow flake. Time came and went with only a few dustings of snow. Finally, our one deep snow arrived in its entire white angelic splendor. I snuggled beneath my blanket with thick socks to warm my feet. The heater ran over time and blasted warm air throughout the cold house. Snow plows ran four at a time and their sound was like music to my ears. The snow lasted only a few days but it was my glory, my satisfaction of comfy and pleasure. That season has passed like a dying friend and I morn at its lost. My heart longs for it like a passion of undying love. I am assured my love will return in short eight months. Signs of spring appeared with a glimmer of rain showers to prove its existence, flowers to tease the most sensual being. But alas spring was almost an apparition it seemed because hot weather stormed in with thunder and lightning and tornados. Temperatures have reached the high eighties and legally summer has not arrived. It is most disconcerting to run the car heater in the early hours and the air in the afternoon. My closet is like a maze with winter attire on one side and summer on the other. The car windows are open wide and the fresh air flows in with fingers that lift strand of hair into my eyes. Then a sneeze pops out as I grab onto the steering and I know allergy season is in full bloom out there. I will get acclimated in this summer rush and find normal and fun things that can only be done in hot weather. For instance, picking blackberries, going on picnics, going on nature hikes. Yes you can do all but picking blackberries in all of the seasons however in the autumn and winter I prefer to snuggle up with my love.

Big Red Last summer I had a visitor, you know the one that arrives but never leaves. However he was not alone but came dragging his better half and his three toddlers. They were of a mixed race it seemed as one toddler was white and one was dusty in color. The third one looked darker with specks of pepper thrown about. The mom was a dainty looking specimen with pointed toes like a ballerina. The male was a sight to behold. I think he was a hippie in his past life. He was adorned in bright red feathers and had deep set intelligent eyes that looked at you sideways. These strange visitors left at night to go where I do not know. However, each morning there they all sat on my front porch waiting for a handout. I found some bread and tossed it to them and they all graveled for it like starved orphans. I do have a kind heart but this just was not my problem. I had to figure out a way to get these homeless creatures to move on. What would the neighbors think, seeing them hovered on my front porch every morning? Once I even took the broom and waved it in the air to scar them off. It worked, all of five minutes. They were a determined lot and remained steadfast like soldiers. I am not a morning person but my new visitors certainly are. They are so punctual that they put me to shame. One morning I had to get up early and I sat quietly drinking my coffee and thinking wow it’s so quite that perhaps the homeless have left to find new places to explore. I cautiously raise the shade and to my horror I stare right into the eye of a beast, no wait, it is those darn squatters again! They don’t seem to be a very intelligent family and if they are not fed they just wonder out into the highway dogging traffic as if to try and commit suicide. I run frantically for food to share with them as I cannot stand a dead body on my conscious. Fall arrives in all its splendor and the chill in the air is predicting the cold that is to come soon. I foolishly begin to worry about this homeless crew and how will they survive in the cold winter. I have no choice but to purchase extra food set aside just for them. What do I get in return I ask myself? So far absolutely nothing! I keep hoping they would go back home to their Master, to a warm soft bed and lots of food but I knew deep down that was not going to happen. One day a certain naughty off spring flew inside my door. I was having none of that! Around and around we ran from one corner to the other and finally she flew out the door. Now I have become attached to these poor homeless critters and actually look forward to seeing them. When I pull in with my car they come running as fast as their little skinny legs will carry them and they gather all around me with a pleasant chorus of greetings. Everyone has at one time or the other had that certain visitor come by and never leave. I can’t help myself for adopting them because I love animals!
Mass Destruction of Our Food Is everyone as confused as I am about what to eat or drink? Every day we are told, don’t eat this or don’t drink that as it will kill you. Diet drinks are so bad for you that one almost feels they are committing a crime if you plop one from the dispenser. I can see ladies secretly grabbing the diet coke and shoving it into their huge purses and in the future there might be a law or fine for concealment of a diet drink like concealment for a weapon. Well according to the research the diet drink is now a mass weapon of destruction. They are not even sure at this point what is in the diet drink that is causing all the trouble. How about all of our food that is causing us trouble and we know what is in it. What are they doing about that? The additives that are in food that also goes in anti-freeze and what about the colorings that cause cancer but still show up in our food supply. Is the big government asleep, are they stupid, or getting a profit from the killing factors in our food? Where is Obama’s wife in all this? She did a great thing about trying to fix the school lunches and save the brains of our children but where does she think they eat when they are not in school? How can we buy the right food if it’s all tainted? They did a study and now they are saying wine gives us cancer and especially women for breast cancer. I think they said also beer as its the alcohol, so first they say drink some it’s good for you and now they are saying no don't drink it. I guess if we listen to them, well, let’s see, we could have water,,,,no wait most of that is impure even in the bottles, so bread and water,,,well, bread, no they say the wheat is spliced with something now and the grain isn't what our forefathers ate and so now the wheat is making us sick, oh, oh, I got it, we can live on our own fat and go out in the summer and fight the bears for rich sun grown berries in the fields,,,REALLY, with all the smog and pollution, those berries are already dusted! Live on I say and pray over the food and do the best with what we have right?
