Native American Heritage Day
Posted On 11/28/2008 09:36:21
Today is Native American Heritage Day honoring the American Indians for their achievements and contributions to the building of our nation.  But this special day has been declared for this year only.  Hopefully this will become an annual celebration honoring you.

To all our native Indian members a big thank you.  Your stories and legends inform and enrich our lives. I always enjoy reading your postings.

Holiday cards for our men in the military
Posted On 11/18/2008 10:03:21

This holiday season let's all send a card to our men in the military. Check out the following websites.  Be sure to read the restrictions and deadlines.

Another card sending opportunity,  this time to the soldiers in Iraq.  Be sure to read the page and the deadline which is before Dec. Their goal is one card for each of the 4300 serving in Iraq.

If you have received the info to send a card to "Any soldier" at Walter Reed Medical Center in D.C. it is false.  According to Snopes.com, Walter Reed will only accept mail addressed to a specific person for security reasons.

BTW  Holiday cards is not my choice of words, but suggested in the above sites.

New threat for your computer
Posted On 10/24/2008 01:20:39

This coming in on special editions of my newsletters tonight.

Microsoft releases off-cycle patch
Microsoft made an emergency security patch available yesterday. It is critical for Windows XP users, but all users of any version of Windows need to download this patch immediately!   (An off-cycle security patch is unusual as MS usually releases patches on Tuesdays.)  Be sure to run Windows Update.  After downloading you will have to reboot your computer for the patch to be effective.

It is a patch for a worm that experts are concerned will spread like wildfire. No user action is required for it to get into your computer. Firewalls, malware, and most anti virus programs will not stop it, especially if you don't keep your up anti virus definitions up to date.

We will learn more about this new worm in the coming days. Why wait... protect your computer now!

Post Turtles
Posted On 10/12/2008 14:26:42
This is not a term for a turtle marooned on a fence post.. it is for people that...

You know they didn't get up there by themselves, they don't belong up
there, and they don't know what to do while they're up there, and you just
wonder what kind of dummy put them up there to begin with".

We use the term  "good old boys system".  One person gets elected to an office, then hires his relatives, friends, or perhaps who donated the most to his campaign fund... whether they are qualified or not. They hold the best jobs for doing nothing, but collect a fat paycheck.  Of course, the other employees have to work and make the Post Turtle look good, or they get fired.

Or it can be a person that has been promoted to a higher position, then it all starts over again.  The wife and children are given positions of no work and all pay.

Think of your work place... local, state, and national government... organizations, etc.  Do you know some Post Turtles?

Isn't this an apt description for many we have encountered?  This is definitely a new term in my vocabulary.

A big thank you to Peter for sharing the term.

A new fee?????
Posted On 06/24/2008 13:15:05
You won't believe this, at least I can't.  My trash hauling company sent a letter saying from now on there will be an additional $3 charge,  for an "ADMINISTRATION FEE", per billing session .  To avoid this, one must sign up for automatic paying and online bills.  OK, I already pay my bills online thru my bank, but I do get the paper bills via snail mail. So now we are being charged to have them send us a bill?  I can understand late fees, which I'm never late anyway, fuel  surcharges, etc... but this is unreal.  For this and other reasons I've been thinking of changing companies anyway... this is sort of the straw that broke the camel's back!
Am I wrong?  Have you ever heard of this?
PS... My bank gives the option of receiving online bills.  I prefer having the paper ones.  I don't like receiving bills in my email. It's a question of what to do with them, setting up how many folders to handle them, etc.  Also questioning privacy issues.

Disparity of estimates
Posted On 05/07/2008 19:54:55

My little piece of Florida is a almost an acre and a half.  A little less than half of it is trees.  On Googling my address one sees all the homes on the street, but in the  middle is one place that has a front yard, big clump of trees, back yard, and more trees.  Under that first clump of trees is where my home is located.

The time has come that the trees need to be trimmed, dead wood cut out, and branches removed so they don't touch the roof.  I started calling recommended tree surgeons for estimates.  I'm only doing the trees in the yard, none in the woods.  Well, the first estimate blew me away, then I started counting my trees.  There are 18 trees in the front alone; big tall pines, several big sprawling oaks, and a few scrub oaks.  Then more of the same on the sides and back.  No trees need to be removed.

The disparity between the four estimates is astounding.  They are $2,000...$1,300... $1,000... and $500.  You can guess which one I accepted.  This work must be done as hurricane season is looming, the trees and my home will fare better if manicured.

Why do I feel as a single senior citizen I'm being taken advantage of... well, they tried to anyway!   Maggi
