The Old Neighborhood
My daughter and I took a car trip to our old neighborhood the other day. What a surprise for us both. There's a nice new restaurant where ours used to be. The building is the same but, the renovations were great. The green apartments where we first lived when we came to FL are now a soft purple with black wrought iron on the balcony railings. Simon Schwartz Grocery is gone, Wileys cleaners is gone, the 'Rent A TV' shop is gone. The Pottery Shoppe is gone, and the gas station with a repair garage is gone. Bayshore Methodist Church is still there. And, there are new shops there now. Cute little Boutique shops. Then, we went to the house in the old neighborhood that my daddy built for us. It's just about a mile from the restaurant that we owned. It was a two bedroom, one floor home with a small back yard. As were most of the homes on the block. Our home had been torn down and a big two story home with a pool in the back yard is now there. I didn't remember the lot being that big. In fact, all the old homes have been replace with new modern homes. If I hadn't seen the street sign I wouldn't have known where I was. When we got home my daughter ask me if I was sad because almost everything from my childhood and teens was gone. Actually, I was so happy to see all the changes! There is something so depressing about going back to the neighborhood where you grew up and seeing it in shambles. Well, now there is a new neighborhood with new folks to make new memories. Life is good :-)
