Mumbai just one example
Posted On: 11/27/2008 19:58:08

Terrorists have attacked Mumbai in several places.  The attacks seemed to be focused on Westerners, especially those with US and UK passports.  That many others perished does not seem to matter to those who threw hand grenades and indiscriminately used their automatic weapons to deadly effect.  The Taj Mahal and Oberoi/Trident Hotels copped it sweet.  At the time of writing, commandos were still going from room to room in the Taj Mahal hotel to rescue guests holed up in their rooms.  That would be a slow process with hundreds of rooms that could be booby-trapped or harbour terrorists.  Fighting was still going on in the Oberoi hotel.

So, what drives these terrorists?  What is their logic behind all this?

  1. Westerners are infidels and must be removed from earth.  Is that it?
  2. Mumbai will feel the fallout of these attacks for a long time to come.  Tourists will stay away from this city for some time to come I imagine.  This means that Mumbai, as a city, will suffer very heavy financial losses.  What have the Indians done to deserve that?
  3. Business people likewise would be wise not to visit Mumbai for the time being.  This means that international trade probably will suffer as well, as no deals can be struck and so on.
  4. It could be that the terrorists consider any non-Westerners who perished or got severly hurt as collateral damage.  Or, is Mumbai being punished because they harbour infidels and do business with them?
  5. Further to point 4, if this is true, the terrorists have a gigantic task ahead of them.  China does do business with the West.  So do just about all other countries.  Wow, where is all this going to end?

Western countries cannot seem to even remotely understand what drives these terrorists.  I have reasons to believe that the terrorists do not  understand the Western mind either.  All they succeed in is getting the Western Alliance to dig their heels in.  Nobody can even remotely afford to think in terms of giving up.  I believe that other countries are now inclined to pull closer together to combat these never-ending attacks.

I must quickly admit that I do not begin to understand the reasons behind these attacks.  Yes, I have have heard and read the many scenarios that are possible.  However, from a personal point of view, I am completely stumped.  It seems that some sort of interpretation of a particular faith enables the terrorists to genuinely believe that their attacks are fully justified.  This is why they willingly blow themselves up, as their faith appears immensely strong.

So, what can we really do about all this?  Nobody seems to have a clue.  I think that the answer should not contain further violence, but what is the alternative?  Education seems to be one possible solution.  The question is how does one approach that?

If you have read this far, you probably will have felt my deep distress that is continually fed throught events of this nature.  I sometimes ask myself these questions:

  1. What would have happened in this world if Religions did not exist?
  2. What would have happened in this world if everybody throughout this world of ours believed in one supreme being without trying to interpret things to their advantage?
  3. What would have happened in this world if a system existed that does not involve money or credits?  I imagine that probably no crime would exist.
  4. What would happen if countries did not exist and the whole world is considered to be our home without borders anywhere?

I fervently desire that anybody who is capable of doing this projects love towards other human beings no matter how you feel about them.  That would be quite a task, would it not?  But....if we were really able to, could we then look forward to a happier and more peaceful world?

The above questions will not be satifactorily resolved during my lifetime.  I nevertheless do my bit and extend love to everybody out there.

Dear Fritz,

I agree with
everything you said. I have been watching CNN all week and following all the
tragic events in Mumbai and like you, it raises so many questions. None easily
answered but I have some ideas. I am going to copy your blog so I can revisit it
often. I want to give this a lot of thought for my own enlightenment in terms of
my global views.

We are living in a
very disturbing period of time on so many levels and I do believe there is a
root cause. Before I express that, I will have to give it further thought. When
I reach some sort of an opinion, I will share it with you in a personal
communication. There are no easy answers to this problem. However, I do think
there is a solution if more people become enlightenment. I believe they will!
It doubt it will happen in our lifetime but I expect it will sooner than
later as the global community becomes aware of their interdependence. The
current financial crises is a great indicator. With further advances in
technology, the issues around borders and boundaries will become more important for our
individual/global survival.
It does require a
huge shift in thinking. Not an easy task. All one has to do is look at the
difficulties we have with relationships within families. The Ego is our Greatest
Enemy!!!!

What would have happened in this world if Religions did not exist?

As most wars are started by leaders who believe that they have a god on their side then without religion there would be few wars. Without religion "thou shall not kill" would have some moral meaning.

What would have happened in this world if everybody throughout this world of ours believed in one supreme being without trying to interpret things to their advantage?

If this became a campaign then you would have to eliminate 80% of the religious groups. Where would you start?

What would have happened in this world if a system existed that does not involve money or credits?  I imagine that probably no crime would exist.

As most murders are out of passion then crime would still exist. And there would still be theft of possessions!

What would happen if countries did not exist and the whole world is considered to be our home without borders anywhere?

Many would form groups by race, these would then become countries again!

Hi NorrdZee. I believe nobody here could ever understand what goes on in the mind of a terrorist. We have no way of thinking the way they do. There was a movie out many years ago that started with the Olympia slayings back.. I can't remember when. It was called "Sword of Gideon". It tries to show how we can kill all these terrorists without becoming like them and the terrible toll it takes on the good guys.
This will not be the last attack by these radicals and every one is very well thought out and very well planned. The innocent victims are collateral damage... yes... not worth a second thought to them.
Very sad and dangerous world we live in these days. These terrorists cannot change or do they want to.
Very interesting blog. I surely can identify with all of your thoughts. I do not believe world peace can ever be achieved, however. My prayers go out to all the innocent victims and all their families left behind to deal with all this insanity. Penny

Well thought out blog.  Very good commentary.

Thank you for  your response, Kiwibarb.  I like to think that this is just another (extended) period in human history where awful things are happening.  I hope that one day all people will come to their senses and start treating earth and its inhabitants as their home with full regard and understanding of every person who reside in this "home".

As of now, there is no solution, because any solution is dependent on some form of mutual agreement, and there is little likelihood of that. We do not  understand the compulsion that drives terrorists to suicide involving mass murder. Whatever their reasons, they must be extremely compelling, because self-survival is a primitive instinct of which terrorists seem to be totally bereft.

I think your concern is well justified. We should all be afraid of what is happening. It's like taking poison to which there is no antidote. We are helpless, and can only stand and watch more and more desolation happening. Yes, there is just cause for concern.

Kiwibarb.
