#2 of the A-Z Challenge

BACK IN TIME TO BC

BC now feels like a lifetime ago although it is only 16 years in human time. BC being Before Canada… Back in those bygone days in England, I always thought that my life was okay. I worked at a job that for the most part, I enjoyed doing… A steward on the ferries which crossed between Dover and Calais… the pay was good and I was able to buy my own little house and live a comfortable if not extravagant lifestyle… I was between wives although I did have lady friends during the 25 years I spent working at sea. And that suited me just fine… My little house became a magnet for lost, stray and unwanted cats and kittens. I guess there were a few who knew me as the cat man of the village. My furry family at any time numbered between 6 and 10 felines. Cats as opposed to dogs were practical pets given as to how independent they are. I installed a cat flap in the back door so my little four legged family could come and go at their leisure due to the long and anti- social hours my shift patterns involved. The joy of living with so many cats was that I was always ensured of a welcoming committee when I walked through the door after a gruelling day or night on the English Channel. The sea may have been rough and the passengers a trial that I wouldn't wish on a crew from a rival company's ship… The welcome was always there. I know they wanted to be fed and fussed, but no matter what, those cats didn't nag, moan  or complain because I was an hour late home from work… Been there done that and was not planning on an action replay… Along with the cats, I had my friends and family and  various interests and hobbies away from work. So all in all my life was okay back in those seemingly long ago BC years before I came to live in Canada.

Could life be any better. Well there are or should be 24 more episodes of this challenge. If you can stand my writing, then time might just tell!

Good story. Keep going. I look forward to reading more! I have always loved cats. It is so interesting to look back over the years at how much our lives have changed.

Thank you!... Ive reached that age where looking back and remembering is easy, but to remember what I had for supper last night. Well that is a whole different story.

Thank you for the compliment, Barb. I have written pieces for friends in the past, but have never really had the confidence to go public... StoryBoat (Kath) messaged me the challenge, and with a rush of blood to the head I accepted. So now for better or worse you are stuck with me.

What happened to all your Cats did you manage to have some 'adopted' or did you take them all with you to Canada?? Polly

I left behind 6 cats when I moved to Canada in July of 1999... Skeeter and Molly who were half brother and sister were rehomed together. Cotton (the feline godfather) happily made his home with a neighbour. Jenny and Jolie were rehomed with 2 elder ladies who were not deemed suitable to adopt from the RSPCA because of their age. The 2 cats were not young and the ladies lived next door to each other, so that practically kept the cats as near together as was possible and the last one was Lucianne who was already sharing herself between me and another neighbour who was more than happy to have her full time... I recieved a picture of Lucianne by email about a year ago. She was alive and looked almost as good as when I left her. She came to me in 1994 as a rehome and was thought to be 4 years old, so I estimate her to have been somewhere close to 24 years old... I did visit England in 2005 and did manage to visit with Jenny who totally ignored me. Jolie, Cotton and Skeeter had passed away from old age... I would have dearly loved to have brought all of them with me, but that was just not possible... My current Canadian Furry family are 3 cats Toby (16) adopted as kitten 1 month after I landed here. Roxy. A kitten abandoned at the landfill. I recycled her 4 years and a bit ago and Beau D'Oronge a stray looking for a home across the tracks from where I live. Many folks fed him and oohed and aahhed over him on facebook but no one was prepared to take him in... So Cat Man to the rescue... The fourth member of the Furry Family is Jaynee a cross border collie/spaniel. Of course a rehome/rescue. She was estimated as 4 years old when she came to me on the last day of January... So, Polly all of the English ones were found good homes well before I left the country and the new Canadian crew are living happily together... Wow! That is almost worthy of another Blog. Smileycons! Smileycons!Smileycons!Smileycons!Smileycons!Smileycons!
