Embarassing moment
Posted On: 08/09/2008 11:30:38

I had to have been about 7 or 8 because my Mom died when I was six. My Dad had ration stamps for shoes but 4 little girls to buy shoes for.  In those "old" days we knelt at the altar rail for communion at Mass.  I did not realize that My dad had put playing cards in my shoes where the holes were and everyone saw the 6 of hearts.  I was mortified at the time.  Someone mentioned ration stamps in a poll and that reminded me of that incident.
Another time I was at my Aunt Bea's and she was baking and had one of those ironing boards that came out of the wall behind a door and when she opened it a mouse ran down and I jumped on the table and spilled 5# of sugar.  She made me scoop up the clean part as there were no more stamps left. I was going to iron so I must have been about 10 at the time.  To this day I hate mice.....they scare me to death   Jackie

I remember the ration books.  One of my older sisters was very hard on shoes, so she used most of ours.  One time she came home with a poorly made pair of sandals, wore them in the rain and they literallly fell apart.  They lasted one day.  My parents were really furious at  her for wasting the stamps.  I also remember putting cardboard inside our shoes and boots to cover the holes to get more wear from them, but we never used anything as colorful as cards.  LOL  Do you remember metal scrap drives and buying Savings Bond stamps in school?
