Not your usual day in the Shoutbox
Posted On: 08/31/2008 10:56:39

Well, the day started like any other day here on The Hill. I was answering comments and messages and welcoming new members. In the early evening I was on the Home Page and noticed that someone had posted something in the Shoutbox about needing help. I politely suggested for her to use the Forum as the administrators did not like using the Shoutbox for such things. Then the message came, “I need someone in Canada.” I thought this a bit strange so I asked, “Why Canada? I’ll help if I can, just send me a message.”

Then I read that she received an email saying that someone she knew had taken a combination of drugs and alcohol and she wanted to get this friend help. WOW! I did NOT expect this, at all. So what do I do now?

I messaged that I would be right back and browsed to see who I might know that was online and lived in Canada. YES, I found someone, so I suggested that she send her a message. I also sent a message so that the other member would know that this was real.

The member that I contacted got in touch with yet another member, who happened to be the only friend of the person asking for help, thinking that she may have been a relative. This was not the case. Hum……..now what?

The person asking for help called an International Operator seeking an ambulance service, but the company she called did not answer.

At this point, with my mind going in all kinds of directions, I began to wonder if this was all real. The person asking for help had only been a member for a few days; only had one friend and was young.

I kept asking myself, ‘Did I do the right thing? Is this really an emergency or just someone playing games?”  I now apologize for these thoughts, but will admit that I had them.

Next came a message  in the Shoutbox saying that she did manage to get another ambulance service and that help was on the way to her friend.

The final outcome is not yet known, but the person who needed the ambulance is now in hospital.

My mind was relieved this morning when I read a message from yet another member of NOTH thanking me for my assistance in this emergency.

YES, it was real and YES, I helped, if only in a small way and it feels SO good!

Thank you Nanzee6 for being the caring and loving person

that you are.  I think you are a  very special gal.  God does work in

mysterious ways, and I'm sure he was guiding you through the whole

situation.

Bless you..........

Well done Nanzee,  you were obviously in the right place at the right time and your quick thinking and willingness to help others is very inspiring.  Just goes to show that people all around the world know that Not Over the Hill has members that are more than just people on a site but true friends and will be there for one another

Hugs Lorraine

Good job, Nanzee!  It's wonderful you were there when you needed to be and knew what to do.  I'm not sure I would have known what to do in that situation.  Things definitely do happen for a reason.  Bless your heart.  Hugs...Sharon

You're a GREAT person for doing what you did. If that was me, I would have felt the same way as in, confusion if it was for real or just a prank but yet feeling so helpless as in what to do. We just never know these days. But if it was a prank, that person would have had to live with thier guilt of what they have caused. But seeings how it was real, you did the right thing and others should follow that same instinct, whether fact or fiction. You're a great person/friend....Hats off to you for doing such a great job Lets hope that person remembers you so they can come back to thank you if not seeings how it was a time of frantic, I'm sure she will always remember "the women" who helped her out at NOTH...~NY~

Good for you, Nanzee!  There are so many practical jokers out there, but I feel it's best to err on the side of caution, just in case the emergency is real, as it was in this case.  I've seen cases like this on other forums and sites, and it's wonderful when members help.  I have to wonder how many times this has happened and people have ignored it, thinking it was a joke.  I'm glad this was not the case here, and that the person had you to help, Nanzee.

God does work in mysterious ways. Not only for having you on THIS end, but also for whomever it was on the OTHER end. I mean, I don't know if I would have thought to use NOTH in such an emergency situation. God brings His Angels to our service in whatever form we need at the time; be it animal or human. I'm glad He chose to use you as His Angel and then helped you to know what to do and who to contact so that another of His children could be saved.

Thank you Lord Jesus for showing us all just how wonderful you are and wonderful it is to have such a loving and caring family here on NOTH to do Your Will here on earth. In Jesus name we pray, Amen.

In addition to what everyone else has written and said of this incident, to which I heartily agree of course, it seems to me to be another example of what I believe in..."Nothing By Chance", proof that there is A Higher Power, and that it was meant to be.  All too much 'coincidence' there, you being there to hear the call for help, you being attentive and reactive to that call for help, you following those steps that set up success.  This was a perfect example of 'an angel in disguise', and that is certainly heartwarming.  What a great place, this gathering on The Hill!  Smileycons!

Way to goooooo!!!   Roberta

Now that brought a tear or two to my eyes. Thank you, my friend.

Years ago I ran two BBS's (bulletin board systems) and I had a similar emergency and thought that a prank was being played. This was before the internet and before cell phones were popular). As it turned out it was a real emergency and I'm glad that I went with my gut feeling about the situation, made the appropriate calls and everything turned out for the good.

Nanzee, what quick thinking! You probably saved that person's life. Sure glad your my friend...

Hugs, Rita

Wow Nanzee, Have to say I marvel at your quick thinking.  I am wondering if I could have done what you did.   I am proud to be a NOTH member,

WOW! I'm so glad you could help when it was needed. Otherwise is just to horrible to think about. In a situation like the one you were in, you could only act as if it were a real emergency. Thank God you did, and thank God someone didn't say that is not appropriate here.

Hi Nanzee........I sure am glad you are my friend here at NOTH.  As a teacher, we encounter many things.....some must be reported (visible), some reportable (verbally told something) , others not.  I always tend to error on the side of BELIEVING and would rather know I was tricked and that no one would be trying to do harm then to second guess.  Plus I am not a good guesser PERIOD.

Thanks for being the caring person you are!  *high fiving ya*

I guess I am like you BELIEVING and I'm sure it's not a bad thing 99% of the time. Sadly, a few years ago I would not even have had those second thoughts.

It was not my idea to do this blog. EB suggested that I do it and who can say 'No' to 'Mom'?  It was just a bit scary there for a bit, but looking back on all that happened, would I have done anything differently? The answer is 'No'.
