emergency power
Posted On: 09/20/2015 22:49:13

By law, all residential buildings should have auxiliary power at least for elevators so infirm people can still use it toget to the ground floor- in our apartments we have to use the stairs at least 8 flights, hopefully we would manage it but if a wheel chair or walker is required the have no chance of getting  them to get to the ground floor if a fire starts we has a crew of fire men advising the tenants on what to do, their suggestion was go onto our balcony, hang a sheet or something to attract their attention then they would raise one of their big ladders and bring us down on that, is a good idea, with only one problem, we don’t have any balconies on our building and windows are far to small to climb out of auxiliary power would fix this if elevators were able to keep working in a power cut problem, I worked on the new parliament building in Brisbane Australia, they had a big generator in the basement to provide  power during a power cut, one law for them and one law for us peasants who pay their wages via tax payments

In most buildings in the US, the elevators are cut off in an emergency.  The stairs are the only way out.  I was working on the 52nd floor of the Pan Am building when a helocopter crashed on the roof.  Fortunately I was much younger, but I walked down 104 flights of stairs and emergency personnel walked up 110 flights of stairs.

I live on top floor of small apartment/flat building. Our stairs are on the outside not inside. Only two floors, top floor and bottom floor. I have a fire escape out if needed with a ladder to the ground.

we're on the top floor and the stairs are the only way down for us two, it will be bum on the stairs all the way down or a slide down the banister--lol, all high rise buildings should have emergency power for elevators, someone in a wheel chair hasn't a hope in hell of getting out
