Blog Entry: November 6, 2014 FROM THE PREVIOUS PAGE A petite mother of a teenager, Mary was the wife of a Federal Drug Enforcement Agent. Once a police officer, and later an Assistant District Attorney, Mary had the unusual combination of a serious countenance coupled with an infectious laugh. Her blonde hair, cut into a pixie style, added to her charm. **** She’s married! Madison was shocked that she’d looked for a wedding ring on Mary’s finger. What are you doing, Madison? Peter is a sad widower and Mary is married. They can’t possibly be having an affair. So why did you look for a ring? And why do you care? He’d be your boss. That makes him off-limits. Get a grip, Madison. Don’t do something stupid. Shaken, Madison had allowed her emotions to control her self-discipline. It was unacceptable to permit such a mistake. And what happened to Peter? The interview was going so well. Peter was smiling and laughing. The position was hers for the taking. So what changed? Why all of a sudden was Peter so serious? Madison looked at Mary to break the awkwardness of Peter’s silence. Something had happened, and she was alarmed. Control had been the cornerstone of her career on Wall Street. Her Tiger of Wall Street crown was an honor that had taken years of hard work and skill to achieve. Assembled in boardrooms, international financiers, conglomerate tycoons, and mega billionaires fell silent when she entered the room. She was the alpha female who wrote the agenda, and recognized who would speak. All of her power and control had left her when she entered Peter’s office. Peter would decide the course of the interview, and Madison was comfortable with that arrangement. She had applied for the position. But, Peter’s silence had given her the sense she was on the defensive. Peter was preparing to attack her credentials, and she must defend herself. There was no other feasible explanation. Such a change in the dynamics of the interview must not occur. Madison’s defense against Peter’s attack was simple. She must regain control of the interview. “Peter, you wanted to ask me something?” Checkmate. Excellent, Madison. You’re back in control and Peter is on defense. Resting his arms on the desk, Peter looked directly into her eyes and said, “I have carefully read your resume, Madison, and listened to you describe your experiences working on Wall Street. Madison, I don’t know if you are the right person for the position.” TO BE CONTINUED
