It Was A Very Good Year...
Posted On 12/31/2020 12:53:44 by yourchoice

It was in 1961, that a song was written and then recorded by Frank Sinatra, which we all sang with great enthusiasm. We had finished three years of nursing training, we could either go back home or apply and accept a ‘paying job’ anywhere we wanted to be. Several classmates had already made wedding plans, and there were no more curfews. There were several who chose to further their education, travel, and work toward new goals. The majority of my classmates were now twenty-one years of age, and that was a big deal!

Times have changed… we’ve had some great years with wonderful experiences, and we’ve had some ‘not-so-good’ years that we don’t want to repeat. We’ve had good jobs, been able to enjoy vacation times, and we’ve watched our families grow up. We’ve even been able to welcome and enjoy grandchildren… who are not ‘children’ any more, but mature young adults, stretching their ‘wings’ to get ready to fly. Life carries on!

Where were you in 2000, the year a computer bug threatened to bring down modern civilization? It was the Y2K bug that brought the world together. Experts sounded the alarm, and politicians listened. The crisis was averted due to the unprecedented international effort of governments and private sector leaders around the world. Computers were new and the world was learning how it worked. I had my computer for over 15 years, had a home-based word processing business, and was concerned that I would lose all my files if the virus would hit my computer. We stayed up to watch the new year arrive, and learned that my computer was still working. I’m sure that I checked it again in the morning to make sure that it was still working.  Have the events of this year brought the world together again? We need to look around… find out what has been happening in our own community?

Now we are at the end of 2020, and we have the opportunity to look back and review the year that was. Are there some things lodged in our memory that, in spite of the many negative reports and personal events, we can still sing the last verse of the song…

But now the days are short, I’m in the autumn of the year

And now I think of my life as vintage wine from fine old kegs

From the brim to the dregs, and it poured sweet and clear

It was a very good year.

I’m still here; I am rich in family, neighbors and friends. Most of all, I have a faith that is strong, and even though I don’t understand the mind of God, I know that He is the source of peace, joy, and love.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

This is great!. I think more than a bug in 2000 or 1999 they thought the calender would not trun over 2000 because their calendars they programed into the computers didn't go past Dec. 31, 1999. But somehow it all worked out although I did buy a new computer for the horrible even just in case it happened it had a calender that went on and on and on. But I think they had a Calendar update via download before the dastardly deed ever too place.  :)

You are right with all the bad there is always good and with our faith in our dear Lord and savior we can not go wrong. I hope you had a very Happy New Year too. I did! It was a great night and we stayed up and watched the new year come in. We have also beed rather healty so that is good no COVID-19 so far and hope it stays that way. So good to hear from you. I agree I don't know where everything has gone.

Times have changed indeed the decades '50 and 60s were the best... thanks for allowing me to read it. It is wonderful, I used to write some years ago, but when they deleted them, I gave up,,, so, now we are fighting to keep ourselves as healthy as possible,.. and enjoy ourselves at home... alone,,,

A wonderful read, some very real experiences shared universally too! I can't help feeling that life is like an unending movie length experience... if we could re-write the 'script' of life sometimes...  Ah well!  One thing is certain; we grow from those challenges which at the time, seemed insurmountable!  The strength of the human spirit, and that of great faith, brings a rich and rewarding life, fulfilling goals, and inspiring it in our children, and so on, and so forth. Onward and upward. God Bless

I really enjoyed reading your blog Mona.  I don't understand the mind of God either; but I sure know that He loves me and is in control.  In spite of all the adjustements and changes in 2020, God gave me His peace, joy, contentment and love.  What's ahead in 2021?  Only God knows that; but like last year, He has promised to never leave or forsake me.  I'm standing on that promise.

Hello Mona, thanks for sharing your Blog.  Last Christmas I am so busy because we prepared the Christmas gifts of our employees buying goods , like canned goods, rice and foods that they can put on their table on Christmas.  We have  visitor,  a Church Minister and his family spent a vacation at home.  We spent the day in Tagaytay. Phil where the weather is so cold and look for the nice view of volcano and lush green trees  of the sorroundings.  I'm truly grateful that after 25 years we met again because of the internet that is so useful to everyone.  Have a blessed New Year and be safe .

Thank you for your comments... it sounds like your Christmas was meaningful in many ways. We need to remember that "it is more blessed to give, than to receive". Helping those who need help is alway a good feeling.

Thank you for you comment ... and help in "filling in the blanks". I remember some of the instances regarding the Y2K situation, but not the first-hand details that you provided. If we were all on Zoom... we could have an interesting conversation about our expectations for the New Year.

I so enjoyed your blog.  Each year brings its challenges, lessons, and oops!  As long as we keep our funny bone in good shape we can tackle anything.  In 2000 by last husband passed away.  He was a computer programmer and the big Y2K thing was huge.  The programmers were all working very hard to over come the problems the new year was going to bring.  One thing that a lot of people did not know was that most of the government records from 1900 to 1999 (only the last two digits) recorded the year.   Now, that ment all the government records had to be changed before 2000 hit.  Massive programming went into saving social security, medicare, medical records, birth records, etc.  All because the year for 100 years had been recorded in two digits.

I know I am not telling you anything you don't know but at the gave side service for my husband the minister was reading from the bible.  Just as he said, "Love takes flight..." a piece of paper from his notes slipped out and flew into the open grave.  I had to giggle...  Only my husband would have timed something that well.  I had just praying for a sign that I had done everything he had asked for.  Needless to say, his children did not understand my having a giggle at their father's funeral.  I told them it was between be and their father.  They never forgave me and I have not spoken to them sense.  That is okay.  I also found out I was wife number six.  LOL.  He was a charming man.  2000 was a very interesting New Year.  I think 2020 is going to be a good one too.

For me, each emotion I have felt during my life had a, "reason" attached, a lesson to learn, or a joy to share.  Walking through this life journey I pray I have learned the lessons, felt the joys and the sorrows, the love, and endured each one to shape the human being God had intended for me.  I still pray that how I meet life and pass it on to others find me paying forward the love of God and the joy of my fellow sojourners.  I love the songs we find that put a pep in our steap, or even a life marching turn.  Frank had so many of just those songs.  I loved your blog and always enjoy what you share.  Thanks Mona and may you and yours have a beautiful new year.

Very nice blog, Mona.  I knew the song very well by Frank.  He was such a good singer and had many favorite hits.  I had just gotten a computer in '99 and was cconcerned but not very as I did have tech support from Gateway, something which doesn't exsist these days.  I also have been very lucky with family and friends staying safe.  Not too sure about this 'bug' and really where it all started and why it's here, but we have to live with what's going on as 'we the people'  can't do much about it or anything.  The New Year has started off well for us and all we know.  May continued blessings be yours and hubby's in 2021.

Thanks so much for your response. I remember Gateway in the '90s! So many things that we thought we very special are now gone or 'ho-hum'! And we have to keep learning ... and hanging on to what we know is true!

Thanks so much for your reply... life was different in years goneby for all of us. Some memories are great... some that we hope will never be repeated. I have been enjoying my "photo journals", and much is without words, but they still bring back many wonderful memories.

In my cildhood home we had a book called "The Old Order Changeth". I don't know who wrote it, but it must have been prophetic.  Changes are rapid, and not always beneficial. I used to have a delightful cartoon about that Y2K bug and at the time people were uncertain if there was any truth in it.

You are right, Barb. We've seen a lot of changes in our life's adventures, and we can't turn the clock back; we just need to "go with the flow" as much as we can, and still be thankful.

It's certainly crazy seeing our grandkids not kids anymore. Where did all that time go? I remember the Y2K bug. At that time I didn't have a home computer. You're right how it brought everyone together. I wish we could say the same thing about 2020. There are still many that believe covid is a hoax. The way the internet is now there is so much misinformation and downright lies being passed around on social media. I shake my head sometimes wondering what happened to common sense?
I remember the song, it's been awhile since I heard it. Bringing in the new year is always a big deal in Times Square. Once the ball drops they play Frank's New York New York.

Thanks so much for you insightful reply... I chose to look to 2021 with anticipation and acceptance. There are some things that we can't control... just do the best we can!
