Bedtime as we get older
Posted On 03/07/2021 10:33:05 by Altara33606

Well, I'm in my 70s now and boy, how things have changed.  Even a few years ago, when I was in my 60's, my normal bedtime was no earlier than midnight. I have always been a 'night owl'.   It wasn't unusual for me to stay awake till 2am, reading. Now, I'm lucky to be wide awake at 10pm! Sometimes--since I now seem to wake up by 7am--I'm feeling sleepy by 9pm.

According to my generic version of FitBit, I got 9 hrs and 5 minutes of sleep last night, waking up about 10 minutes to 7. Yes, that includes getting up  2-3 times for the bathroom. But most of the time, I'm able to get back to sleep fairly quickly.  One night this past week, I was very involved in some computer 'things', and I actually didn't get to sleep till 11:30pm! But that's unusual now.  I still 'need' my 9 hours of sleep most of the time; that's been my normal for a very long time.  My 'bedtime' has just changed.

Blog reading was not my thing when I used to visit the Hill often.  I decided to take a look at some of your writing. You have a nice style with elements that are spoken of as good writing.  Now on to the comment on the little blog.  I am a night owl too, but used to be an "extreme night" owl.  Definition- one who normally goes to bed at 2-4+a.m. Long story short, In Dec of 2021, I start being a good little night owl 🦉 and go to sleep at 12-1 a.m.

Interesting post Altara ..... I've been a night owl pretty much for the length of my existence! The funny thing is, it won't matter what time I get off to sleep: I always wake in the morning pretty early. It is almost impossible for me to 'sleep in'.... even if I have only had an hour or two's sleep!  I am waiting for the time thing to change - so far anyway it's the same old same old!

I sleep when I get sleepy.  I eat when I am hungry.  I rarely look at a clock except to see if it is time for a TV program to record.  I watch everything from the DVR so I can fast forward past the commercials.  I find myself awake at midnight and asleep at one in the afternoon.  I rarely sleep for long periods of time.  Lots of cat naps.  I usually have to check the clock before I try to call someone, just in case they might not be up at two in the morning.  Thank you for sharing.  I enjoyed it.

I'm lucky to make it till 9 these days. I still rise like I was still working. Anytime between 4 and 4:30 a. m. I actually made it to 10 p.m. last night and woke at 6 a. m.
