I Confess
Posted On: 11/27/2013 09:33:30

I am going to be 83 next month. I know, that's a long time ago. But in those years I have seen a lot of things and a lot of changes. My confession is this...I am a Holiday snob. We were brought up with the feeling of celebrating holidays with family and bonding with each other on those days set aside with feelings of love and enjoyment of each other's company. Now, I am wondering why this had to change. First of all I never liked the phrase "Black Friday". Sounds like they made the day after Thanksgiving a day of mourning. Yesterday morning as I was watching TV I got a real smack in the stomach. They were referring to Thanksgiving as "gray Thursday"....really???? So, watching the ravings of the retailers out there makes me so unhappy. Just what are the holidays about anymore...who are the holidays for ...family or retailers? Some states are allowing stores to open on Thanksgiving afternoon or sooner. What?? So, our families get together, give thanks, have a wonderful meal and in a bit our favorite pies or desserts then it's "see ya later have to go shopping now". In most cases the big sales that are happening have been cheaper at an earlier time. It just seems such a shame that it has come to this. As for me, I am hosted by a different child (I had 5) each Thanksgiving and we still uphold the meaning of it all. We stay at home and the guys (and some gals) watch football ...a great tradiditon...then we get out the leftovers and make turkey and cranberry sandwiches...hit the desserts again and talk about the good old days..I always say they were the good old days, we just didn't know it. So, those are my feelings and I'm sticking with them. Happy Thanksgiving.

I agree with everything you've said.  It won't be too many more years, and the stores will have to open on the 4th of July to keep up with the others who are opening early for the shopping ritual.  They seem to have to outdo each other on which store can open the soonest, has the best bargains etc and in my area, even the car dealerships are calling "Black Friday.  Come on, cars too?  I call it what it is......GREED!  Ellie

It is all so ridiculous. Maybe some day folks will realize that. One can only hope.   Alice

When a senior member of the family is no longer part of the family in the sense of being the head of the household, the family unity falls apart.  The young seem to forget what family truly means.  In our case, we are forced to have Christmas early by 2 weeks because they decided to leave for Disney.. last year we somehow managed to stay together, but previous years they would leave for the states.. so it was just a rush of getting gifts, doing the Christmas scene without your heart in it,  knowing that from the cottage they would be going home, packing and going off on a vacation.  Somehow, I feel that we are almost cast aside.  For as long as I can remember, all holidays were spent with my Mother and Father, either their home or mine, sometimes a double meal lol..'case there were in-laws that had to be considered here.. but there were no vacations at these times, summer was the time for that.  Families are falling apart, they are even too busy for themselves.. hardly anyone ever sits at the table for a meal, everything is done on the run... There is a crisis..no longer is there a true "head of the house".. The pride is no longer there.. It's more of what we have, or what we are getting, or where we are going.  Sad..
Not looking forward to Christmas.. Looking forward to seeing the grands and that's all..     Color me a 'Black Christmas"   Nancy

Everything you say, Alice, is so true!  These times were so special for us growing up.

Don't think it will be nearly as "special" to youngsters growing up these days.  And - sadder still - is that children's lives these days are so different than ours.  Most Mom's have to work and kids are involved with soooo many activities - everyone's missing out on dinner at the kitchen table most every night....
