Meet Our Neighborhood Gang!
Posted On: 02/23/2013 00:08:48

The neighborhood gang arrived this morning … the weather was nice enough for them to leave the shelter of the bushes in the valley south of us. Whenever they pass through our yard, we get the camera, and watch from our window. We have mixed feelings when they arrive … we love to watch the wildlife from our window, but this bunch are not related to Bambi. They strip the newly-planted trees, they eat flowers in our flower pots, and the bucks will charge if they think we shouldn’t be where they want to be. I can’t say that they are cute, except for the babies with the spots who run and skip behind their mothers. They move up and down our valley, and seem to be quite comfortable in the neighborhood.

It seems that they understand that the people here won’t shoot them because the only weapon allowed in the area is a bow and arrow, and it’s hard to find anyone who can shoot a straight arrow. Almost everyone in a vehicle will slow down when the gang decides to cross the road, and loud noises like horns and loud motors don’t bother them … they’ve heard them all before.

However, what gets their attention, as we watched this morning, are the dogs. Our neighbors down the road from us have two young dogs who take great pleasure in chasing ‘the gang’ from their territory. Nobody walks on their yard without permission, so the gang keeps their distance. They stand on the hill in front of our house, and watch and listen. If the dogs don’t go back to their house, the gang will trot off in the opposite direction. No point in causing a fuss on such a beautiful morning.

No deer here, but the kangaroos will eat all the new buds in the garden. I live in the city, so fortunately don't have to worry. I'd be happy to see the kangaroos on my lawn. Lots of people in the outer city area have these big footed visitors who like to chow down on their gardens.

Around Ohio deer are so very plentiful they are now in the cities.  Actually when my daughter lived at her old place an apartment building in the city there was just a narrow length of wooded land that ran along the railroad tracks near her place the deer were so tame in the early morning and evening they would come into the complex and walk up and down the sidewalks waiting for people to come out and give them food.  And you could walk right up to them and pet them and give them an apple.  She hated them cause you had to be so careful driving in the entrance road to the buildings. And honking a horn did not really disturb them at all.  They cause lots of accidents too around here too.

Thank you for sharing your story and pictures. I enjoyed it very much. Occasionally we see small Key deer here in Tampa and around Disney. But, It is rare.

Once lived in a house out in the sticks. I could not fathom out why the tops of my roses were disappearing till early one morning I caught Roe deer delicately nipping the heads of the bushes.  Losing a few roses made up for the quiet magic of seeing these beautiful creatures.

A stag and a fox also came near the town of Brasov  in Romania. Your blog was a pleasure for the eye and to my soul. Still sorry for the damages you suffered.

Sounds great. We have lots of deer here also but the dogs keep them ran off. I love watching them, not so much fun when they run out in front of cars though.
