Saturday nights seem to have become bath nights for Teddy, our toy poodle. Not quite sure how this happened but there you are. So yesterday, along came another Saturday night and Teddy dutifully hopped into the shower with hubby. The routine is that one of us washes him, the other dries and last night I was doing the drying. With a peach coloured towel.
Before I go any further, I'd better explain Teddy's routine. Shampoo and rinse in the shower, brisk rub in a towel to get most of the water out of his coat, then down on the bathroom floor on the towel where he rubs his ears on the towel until they are thoroughly dry. While he's attending to his ears, I get busy with the hair dryer on the rest of him. OK, that's the stage set.
Shampoo, rinse and towel dry having been completed, down onto the towel on the floor went Teddy and off he went into his ear drying routine. Sometimes he puts more energy into this exercise than at other times, and last night he was very energetic. He was so energetic, in fact, that he got one end of the towel pulled up into a bundle and burrowed his head under it. His hind legs worked frantically to propel him into his towelling burrow .... so frantically that he did a complete head-over-heels somersault and landed on his back looking very surprised indeed!
Now I don't know if dogs recognise colours, but there was definitely something about this peach towel that Teddy reckoned was extremely dangerous. Maybe it was the colour that had done it! He hopped briskly under my legs and stared at the towel with consternation and bewilderment plainly written all over his face. Of course, he now had the problem of what to do about drying his still damp ears, so he set about rubbing at them with his still damp paws, which wasn't really very effective. His bewilderment increased while I tried desperately not to fall off my seat with laughter. Poor Teddy gazed around the bathroom, presumably looking for inspiration. And his prayer was answered. Hubby stepped out of the shower holding a green towel, and without further ado, Teddy leaped at the towel, got a firm grip and pulled it to the floor where he triumphantly finished the ear drying exercise.
I"m not sure what will happen if we try to use the peach coloured towel next bath time. Maybe Teddy will have forgotten about it, but I doubt it. Like most dogs, he has a very good memory! Today, he's been his usual rambunctious self, so I guess the unexpected acrobatic exercise hasn't done any lasting harm. In truth, I think he's plotting how to use that little trick to get into more mischief!
Well, that was our entertainment for the weekend, and we're still laughing over it. Wonder what he's got up his .. uumm paw, for next week?
Cheers,
Sylvia
