Night Sounds

As the darkness surrounds me and a light summer breeze blows gently through the open window of my bedroom. I lie here listening to the intriguing rhythms of the songs that penetrate the stillness of the night. Very near, I can hear a choir of frogs singing they’re very best while waiting for fellow friends to respond in melodious harmony. A little further away I can hear the baying of a hound, perhaps on the heels of some misfortunate four-legged creature.

I can only imagine the number of black winged cave dwellers that are soaring through the darkened sky, guided by their own sonar. They must be catching many unsuspecting insects for a tasty meal.

Into the black abyss, a hooty ol’ owl can be heard perched on his lofty dwelling place among the pines that reach high above the house. He seems to be warning everyone not to come near his nesting place.

The clickity clack of a train, from across the river, can be heard as it glides along miles of seemingly endless track. In my minds eye I can see many sleepy passengers dozing off, as they are lulled to sleep by the rhythm of the cars that move swiftly through the night.

A plane passes over-head, the hum of the engine can be heard strong and steady for a short time. Then, as quickly as it came, it is gone.

Sometimes, I as a child of God, need to take time out and be silent before him. Maybe I need to open the window of my soul and let God breathe his breath of fresh air into the depths of it. Could all of these night sounds be God’s way of telling me I need to slow down and listen to the tune of his voice? All to often, I am unable to hear it over the noise of all the day sounds. I have often been so distracted by the ‘doing’ melody that I don’t hear the rhythm of the heavenly chorus.

I am like the four-legged creature that is about to get caught by the hound of my sinful nature. This nature doesn’t need a cave to dwell in nor does it need the cover of darkness to feed itself. If I choose to fuel this sinful nature by the lusts of the flesh, it will respond to my willingness to feed it. By his still small voice the Lord reminds me of the impending danger of getting to close to the flames of my own desire.

He then swoops in and carries me back to his nest, where he hides me under his feathers and rocks me to sleep by a heart that beats steady and strong with his everlasting love for me. I am once again safe and secure, surrounded by his mercy and grace, traveling down the endless track toward my eternal home in heaven.

Recipe for Happiness
Posted On 07/22/2008 22:23:30

Ingredients: A smile -  sunshine - happiness - work - play - thoughtfulness - care.

Take a great big mixing bowl and fill it with a smile; mix half a cup of sunshine with good deeds to last awhile. Add a pinch of work and play. A dash of thoughtfulness and care.

Don't bake it in the oven, just spread it everywhere.

Church Gossip

Mildred, the church gossip and self-appointed monitor of the church morals, kept sticking her nose into other people's business. Several members did not approve of her activities, but feared her enough to maintain their silence. She made a mistake, however, when she accused George, a new member, of being an alcoholic aftr she saw his pickup parked in front of the town's only bar one afternoon. She emphatically told George (and several others) that everyone who saw him parked there would know exactly what he was doing.

George, a man of few words, stared at her for a moment and then just turned and walked away. He didn't explain, defend, or deny. He said nothing. Later that evening, George quietly parked his pickup in front of Mildred's house, walked home, and left it there all night.
