Five Cents per song on Jukebox
Posted On: 11/10/2021 15:20:15

While listening to some of my favorite songs from the 1980s the other day, I heard the phrase: "put another dime in the jukebox"; that brought back memories! But when I was a child, it cost a nickel to play a song.

Of course, I was a pre-teen at the time. I don't remember exactly how old I was, but I was probably seven or eight years old. The reason I remember it so vividly was that my one grandmother ran a truck stop for a few years--and I spent a lot of time there with her. There was a jar of nickles that I could use to play music on the jukebox--and each of those nickels had a splotch of nail polish on it. When the machine was 'emptied', all of those nickles were put back into the jar to be used again. At this point, I don't remember which songs I played over and over--but I know there were at least half a dozen! I've always loved music. And I still do.

I don't recall how much a song cost when I was a kid. I remember Woolworth's in my neighborhood had the selections at the luncheon counter you could play. I remember in the 80's the price for jukebox at other places was .25. So you must have been listening to Joan Jett.

I saw him dancin' there by the record machine
I knew he must a been about seventeen
The beat was goin' strong
Playin' my favorite song
And I could tell it wouldn't be long
'Til he was with me, yeah, me
And I could tell it wouldn't be long
'Til he was with me, yeah, me, singin'
I love rock n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby
I love rock n' roll
So come and take your time and dance with me
Ow
He smiled, so I got up and asked for his name
"That don't matter", he said, "'cause it's all the same"
I said, "Can I take you home where we can be alone?"
And next we were movin' on
He was with me, yeah, me
Next we were movin' on
He was with me, yeah, me singin'
I love rock n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby
I love rock n' roll
So come and take your time and dance with me
Ow
Said, "Can I take you home where we can be alone?"
Next we were movin' on
He was with me, yeah, me
And we'll be movin' on
And singin' that same old song
Yeah, with me, singin'
I love rock n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby
I love rock n' roll
So come and take your time and dance with me
I love rock n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby
I love rock n' roll
So come and take your time and dance with
I love rock n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby
I love rock n' roll
So come and take your time and dance with
I love rock n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby
I love rock n' roll
So come and take your time and dance with
I love rock n' roll
So put another dime in the jukebox, baby
I love rock n' roll
So come and take your time and dance with me
