Viewing 1 - 9 out of 9 Blogs.
Hello everyone. I intended to put this in the forum but couldn't figure out how to do that, so.... Wouldn't it be nice to be able to take all the polls on a page before having to 'submit' so that the page doesn't have to reload for each and every poll? Poll taking would be more pleasant. If that can't happen, I will still be taking the polls, tho. lol Have a great day! --tomnydog
Hey everyone! Don't you like the idea of being able to answer all the polls on a page before having to submit your anwers? Then we wouldn't have to return every time to answer the polls. Hm......

I am quoting Cloudeight Information Avenue - Issue #335 - June 28, 2008 herein because I have noticed people (myself included) using their real names and other personal information. Please read: "I have a couple of friends that have a web site, called Blog, where they put pictures and information about their family. I am wondering if this is safe to do? I enjoy reading your newsletters, learn a lot from them. Thank you. Ms Deon Our Answer We would never advise anyone to post pictures of their family on the Web and include any real names, addresses or any other personally identifiable information. It's quite OK (we think) to share family pictures online as long as your real name, address, and phone number are not posted anywhere that a casual viewer could find out who you are and where you live. That's just asking for trouble. Our social networking site, NotOverTheHill, features lots of family photos (over 16,000 photos of family, landscapes, etc. are currently viewable in the galleries on The Hill) but our members use nicknames not real names, and no one lists their address or phone number. Also, NotOverTheHill keeps all of our members email addresses totally private. They are never revealed to anyone for any reason. The Hill has hundreds of blogs, groups, songs, videos, and personal profile pages. People really do enjoy sharing their lives with others. There's a right way and a wrong way to do it. And, the right way is by not using your real name, not publishing your address (or phone number) anywhere on a site where the public can view them. And never (EVER!) publish your email address on the Web. It's just good common sense if you're going to post pictures of your children or grandchildren for others to view or share with family members who live far away, that you don't include your real name, address, telephone number or other personally identifiable information anyplace on the Web - especially on a site where you're posting pictures of your children or grandchildren. Your family members don't need that information, they already know it, and the public doesn't have any business knowing that kind of personal information. Unfortunately the Web reflects the real world and the real world is full of seedbags and miscreants who prey on children and other innocents. While it is fine to share photos, common sense dictates that you don't unintentionally send an invitation to the slimeballs on this planet who would love nothing better than a phone number or address so they can prey on innocent people." This is just a word of caution to all my friends on the Hill.

#yiv971522494 v:* { } #yiv971522494 v:* { } I came across this phrase yesterday 'FENDER SKIRTS.'

A term I haven't heard in a long time, and thinking about 'fender skirts' started me thinking about other words that quietly disappear from our language with hardly a notice like 'curb feelers'

And 'steering knobs.' suicide knob.
Since I'd been thinking of cars, my mind naturally went that direction first.
Any kids will probably have to find some elderly person over 50 to explain some of these terms to you.
Remember 'Continental kits?'
They were rear bumper extenders and spare tire covers that were supposed to make any car as cool as a Lincoln Continental.

When did we quit calling them 'emergency brakes?'
At some point 'parking brake' became the proper term. But I miss the hint of drama that went with 'emergency brake.'
I'm sad, too, that almost all the old folks are gone who would call the accelerator the 'foot feed.'
Didn't you ever wait at the street for your daddy to come home, so you could ride the 'running board' up to the house?
Here's a phrase I heard all! the Time in my youth but never anymore - 'store-bought.' Of course, just about everything is store-bought these days. But once it was bragging material to have a store-bought dress or a store-bought bag of candy.
'Coast to coast' is a phrase that once held all sorts of excitement and now means almost nothing. Now we take the term 'world wide' for granted. This floors me.
On a smaller scale, 'wall-to-wall' was once a magical term in our homes. In the '50s, everyone covered his or her hardwood floors with, wow, wall-to-wall carpeting! Today, everyone replaces their wall-to-wall carpeting with hardwood floors. Go figure.
? When's the last time you heard the quaint phrase 'in a family way?' It's hard to imagine that the word 'pregnant' was once considered a little too graphic, a little too clinical for use in polite company, so we had all that talk about stork visits and 'being in a family way' or simply 'expecting.'

I always loved! going to the 'picture show,' but I considered 'movie' an affectation.
Most of these words go back to the '50s, but here's a pure-'60s word I came across the other day - 'rat fink.' Ooh, what a nasty put-down!
Here's a word I miss - 'percolator.' That was just a fun word to say. And what was it replaced with? 'Coffee maker.' How dull. Mr. Coffee, I blame you for this.
? I miss those made-up marketing words that were meant to sound so modern and now sound so retro. Words like 'DynaFlow' and 'Electrolux.' Introducing the 1963 Admiral TV, now with 'SpectraVision!'
? Food for thought - Was there a telethon that wiped out lumbago? Nobody complains of that anymore. Maybe that's what castor oil cured, because I never hear mothers threatening kids with castor oil anymore..
Some words aren't gone, but are definitely on the endangered list. The one that grieves me most, 'supper..' Now everybody says 'dinner.' Save a great word. Invite someone to supper. Discuss fender skirts.
Someone forwarded this to me. I thought some of us of a 'certain age' would remember most of these.

Just for fun, pass it along to others of 'a certain age'!
IF YOU AREN'T OF A CERTAIN AGE. YOU MUST KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS.

widgets

Hi All! I want to put a widget on my desktop but I don't like things running in the background unnecessarily. (No one does, hehe.) But I open many pages at once for research and don't want extra drainage on my 'power'. Do widget engines take up more power than I want to let go of? At this point, I only know of one that I would use regularly. What widgets, if any, do you use, or do you like them? Looking forward to your feedback. --tomnydog
The info on NOTHILL is growning deeper and deeper and I am flailing about trying to learn how to add background to my page. Someone throw me a life jacket that fits--one I can understand. tomnydog
