“Every Sunday morning I take a light jog around a park near my home.  There’s a lake located in one corner of the park. Each time I jog by this lake, I see the same elderly woman sitting at the water’s edge with a small metal cage sitting beside her.

This past Sunday my curiosity got the best of me, so I stopped jogging and walked over to her. As I got closer, I realized that the metal cage was in fact a small trap. There were three turtles, unharmed, slowly walking around the base of the trap. She had a fourth turtle in her lap that she was carefully scrubbing with a spongy brush.

‘Hello,’ I said. ‘I see you here every Sunday morning.  If you don’t mind , I’d love to know what you’re doing with these turtles.’

She smiled. ‘I’m cleaning off their shells,” she replied. “Anything on a turtle’s shell, like algae or scum, reduces the turtle’s ability to absorb heat and impedes its ability to swim. It can also corrode and weaken the shell over time.’

‘Wow! That’s really nice of you!’ I exclaimed.

She went on: ‘I spend a couple of hours each Sunday morning, relaxing by this lake and helping these little guys out. It’s my own strange way of making a difference.’

‘But don’t most freshwater turtles live their whole lives with algae and scum hanging from their shells?’ I asked.

‘Yep, sadly, they do,’ she replied.

I scratched my head. ‘Well then, don’t you think your time could be better spent? I mean, I think your efforts are kind and all, but there are fresh water turtles living in lakes all around the world. And 99% of these turtles don’t have kind people like you to help them clean off their shells.

So, no offense… but how exactly are your localized efforts here truly making a difference?’

The woman giggled aloud. She then looked down at the turtle in her lap, scrubbed off the last piece of algae from its shell, and said,

Sweetie, if this little guy could talk, he’d tell you I just made all the difference in the world.'”

Hello my dear friend Touch Painter, thank you so much for more informative comments about the Turtles. You and my Brother are almost the same. During our elementary grade school days , he always bought a small turtles and make it as pet.  He put in our aquarium but after a month it dies, because the shell still soft and lack of the temperature of the aquarium.  I enjoyed your story about your grandmom and  Cynthia. I'm sorry for your loss,  may they rest in peace. Have an amazing week  and keep safe.  Hugs

Good day Writter Deb, you definitely right.  By
helping other we  make the world a better place and giving hope to those
who might not otherwise have it. It is a kind gesture  without any
expected rewards. It helps to create stronger communities that are
concerned with the well being of each and every individual as we work towards a
happier society for all.. Have a beautiful day.  Hugs

Hi Jane, thank you so much you love my Blog.  Being so kind  and compassion to animals is intimately connected with goodness of character. I admired you for caring and helping the turtles across the street. You have a good heart.  Hugs . :)

Turtles also breath through their shells, and if the shell gets too clogged they can die. When I was a kid we used to buy those little red ear turtles from the pet store with the pictures painted on them. They always died young. When it was found out the paint blocked them from breathing and caused them to die, painting turtles became illegal. Cynyhia the neighbor living behind my grandmother scrubbed the picture off her turtle and it lived for many decades. It was potty trained to use a cat's litter box (there was a ramp for it to get in & out) and would ask to go outside even in the Massachusetts winter and go potty. After a couple decades it was so big & heavy, they didn't let it out in the winter any more. It had a cool name, but I can't remember it. My grandmother passed away in the 1990s Cynthia passed shortly before her of cancer. She and Cynthia (who was my parents age) were the bestest of friends (almost sisters), and I know they are inseperably together in heaven playing scrabble & double solitare... still. Cynthia's kids (who were a little younger than me)had gotten the turtle as a kid's pet when they were very young, & took over the care of the adult turtle. My mother kept in touch, but people move on, & that is where I lost track of Cynthia's family.

Thank you for sharing your story, I started tearing up, and thought of that highly intellegent adult turtle behind my grandmother's house, that I had loved & admired so much.

Love this story.  A saying I have always gone by in life is, "Do for the one what you wished you could do for the many."  It gets me thought those times I wish I had this or that to help others.  We can't do it all but we do make a difference by simply taking one small action, whatever that may be.

Thanks for sharing.

I loved this story.  I guess it is true.  We are never asked to save the whole world but just take care of the part that is part of our part.  Don't get lost in the part you play just be kind.  I stop in traffic and help turtles get across the street.  I have done it for years.  I never regretted it once.  Thank you for sharing.

Hello Brother,  a snapping turtle would be found in the woods so far from water during the spring .The first hypothesis would be that the turtle was a female with eggs. Most turtles lay their eggs during late spring and early summer. And traveling more than a mile from the water searching for a suitable nesting site. Thank you so much for the nice informative comments.  Best regards to You and to your loving wife  Sister Ginger.  I love you both. Big Hugs and Kisses.

You blog makes a great point... it is the little gestures that all of us have the ability to share, make a difference, even the ones that don't seem to be very important.

thank you Sis for sharing this...it does makes a big difference if only a few people in this world would help these turtles and other animals...i used to live in Florida,i have found sooo many turtles away from lakes...i love animals,so i would get them and take them back near a lake...some of them would be soooo far away from water, you wonder how they got soooo far away

Old bras can be used to rescue injured turtles, Carolina Waterfowl ...
