Lost and Found
Posted On: 05/01/2013 00:12:04

CRS is sometimes a painful thing.  Today I lost one of the Muppets.  The bear who tells (mostly) lame jokes--you know the one.  And I know him, too.  But could not for the life of me come up with his name.  I'm not sure why my mind came around to even thinking about the Muppets, but there it was, while the bears' name wasn't.  I could remember Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo, Bunsen and Beaker...even Fred, Kermit's nephew.  In racking my brain I also cross-referenced Sesame Street characters; Big Bird, Bert and Ernie, the Count (whose one job is to count things...one, that is ONE job...), Cookie Monster and Oscar the Grouch.  Oscar has always been my favorite.  He and Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh's Hundred Acre Woods make one heckuva pair of realists for cartoon/children's characters.  "Always with the negative waves, Moriarity, always with the negative waves...".  Bonus points if you can come up with the movie that quote came from.

See?  Odd little things clatter around in my head.  Bits and pieces.  Riff and raff.  And Rolf.  But not a lowly joke-telling bear-puppet.  I know why, too.  No grandkids.  Yep, it's all my grown children's fault, not delivering any progeny, thus refreshing my memory banks with streams of childhood characters to keep up with.  Harumph!  Perhaps in time...

So I went on with my day; took a shower, (which sometimes clears up a stubbornly blocked memory--maybe I have a dirty mind?  Alas, it did not do the trick this time.) checked on the cats, folded some clothes and did other laundry chores since I was in the basement anyway.  As I was thinking of a song--no, no idea why this one came into my head, either--the name of the bear came back to me.  Fozzie Bear.  Why on earth was that so hard to come up with?  And what about that song suddenly brought it back?  ..."And we danced, like a wave on the ocean, romanced...we were liars in love and we danced..."  A song by the Hooters from the 80's, I think.  Nothing to tie it into a fuzzy, rather ugly puppet with a hat who tells silly jokes.  Not even a song about laundry, which I was doing and about which the songs I most mis-remember have a theme of.  That's called a 'mondegreen', by the way.  Mishearing or mis-remembering a song lyric.

I bet you're thinking there can't be two songs about laundry.  Ha, there is so!  "Dirty Laundry" by Don Henley, about which I always come up with the line, "Stick your fingers in your ears, you've got dirty laundry".  No, that is definitely not one of Mr. Henley's song lyrics.  But that line comes up whenever I think of that song anyhow.  The other laundry song?  An old Mathew Wilder song called "Break My Stride".  It contains the lines: "Last night I had the strangest dream...I sailed away to China...In a little row boat to find ya...And you said you had to get your laundry cleaned".  See?  But I don't mis-remember that part.  It's the chorus that gets me (probably because I never remember the title of this song...I had to Google...the modern version of the Funk and Wagnell's...Dan Rowan and Dick Martin would be proud...) confused.  My version is "Ain't nothin' gonna break-a my spine...ain't nothin' gonna slow me down...oh no, I got to keep on movin'...  Of course the reality is "Ain't nothin' gonna break-a my STRIDE...."  There might be something Freudian in that one since my back likes to go out without me.

But now all is as it should be.  Memory blank filled...for awhile.  Welcome back, Fozz E. Bear.

Touched...

Heavens, how could I have left out ANIMAL???  And if you're flexible enough to be able to insert your foot in your mouth...count your blessings!!  Hee-hee-hee...!

FOZZ E is a favorite of mine, he reminds me of me... Good hearted, but always inserts foot in mouth

Animal is my all time favorite Muppet!!!!

Opps...Thank you for the fill-in about Captain Kangaroo--no wonder I couldn't think of a name for the moose if he was just "Mister"!  I didn't know that Bert and Ernie were named after the characters from "It's a Wonderful Life", but I did notice the names and always thought it was neat.  What a great movie, huh?  I'm glad you have a sister to help you remember things!  My brother tends to remember more of stuff that happened when we were kids than I do, so I rely on him to keep those memories for me.  But for all other stuff...Google is a wonderful thing!

Jackie...Awww, thank you so much!  I have been toying with a couple of other ideas; might just write them up.  And if I do half as well as you do when I get to be the age you are now...I'll be sitting pretty and happy as a clam!  The only french songs I know even the least bit of...gee, I started thinking there was only one and now I'm up to three...wahoo!  And I have no idea what I had for lunch two days ago!

Junie...Ha-ha-ha...yes, sometimes my memory comes up with things days or even weeks after I wanted to come up with something.  Does me absolutely no good if it was during a conversation, but the satisfaction of snagging what I knew was rattling around my brain is such a good feeling!  I go through the alphabet when trying to figure out crossword puzzle answers sometimes, never thought of using that trick for remembering anything else.

And while I used to be able to know folks I'd run into with no problem...I'm finding that more and more names have sunk far enough down in my memory that they don't always come to the surface when I need them.  Makes me feel dumb, though it shouldn't...memory (and remembering) can be a tricky thing!

Well, Paula, this all reminds of my poor memory, at times. At my age I feel I'm entitled. Allen and I will be watching TV or talking about something else I, sometimes, I can't remember a name. I go throught the alphabet and vowels to try to remember. many times I can do it that way but there are times I can't I've woke myself up in the middle of the night remembering that name!

I also ran into someone I knew many years ago and didn't know who it was. The person just kept talking to me like I knew them and it took me two weeks to finally remember who it was!

Capt Kanagroo.. Mr. Moose.. there was a rabbit called Bunny Rabit.  Mr. Green Jeans,  Grandfather Clock.  were the regular characters.  They kept it simple for kids back then.  Capt Kanagroo I believe was the longest running show ever on TV.  Bob Keeshen was the Captian before that he played Clarabell the clown on Hoody Doody Show.

A bit about Sesame Street. Burt and Erinie were named after two characters in From the movie Its A Wonderful Life.  The cop and the cab driver.

Yup happens to me so I call my Sister and if she cant give me the answer we both are bothered by it ..... I do not like to have CRS with out having company to enjoy it with me.

Hi Walt...bonus points go to you, my friend, as the movie quote is, indeed, from "Kelly's Heroes".  And my thanks for adding yet another song to my list of "Laundry Tunes"; it's not one I've heard of before--not surprising since I was born well after WWII.  Thanks for stopping by and kudos for getting the movie quote!  Love and Hugs~~Paula

Hi Paula....me thought at first the the ''negative waves'' was from McHails Navy,,,but found it was from ''Kelly's Heros''with regard to Laundry songs,,the one that came to my mind from wartime memory was the British propaganda song sung before France was overrun in the 40's..

''We're going to hang out the washing on the Siegfried Line.

Have you any dirty washing, mother dear?

We're gonna hang out the washing on the Siegfried Line.

'Cause the washing day is here.''

was not sung much untill after ''D''day............cheers..Walter.

Junie...

Aw, that's okay.  I had forgotten all about Grover; now he will be renewed in my memory, too.  Thank you!!

05/01/2013 22:41:07

I need to clear up my mistake. It was not Oscar but was Grover that my son had but the rest is correct.

Oh, Barb...you have been much too busy living life to have missed any characters on the telly!

Blue Eyes...no, wrong genre of movie.  Believe it or not (here's a hint, guys) it's from a war movie.

Junie...Thank you!  My son used to have an Oscar the Grouch who poppe out of a garbage can when you pressed on a little air pump.  I thought it was just hilarious, laughed at that silly toy until I had tears in my eyes!  It's long gone, I think, though Nick (like your son Steve) has held onto other things from his childhood and refuses to part with them even though he's now 30 years old and counting.  I'm so sorry your son has died...you must miss him very, very much.

Helen...I used to watch Cap'n Kangaroo, too.  Let's see...Mr. Green Jeans (or was it Mr. Green Beans?) and there was a moose puppet, too.  But I don't remember the moose's name.  Someone will if you Google it--I'd bet on that!

Thank you all, both for your reading of my blog and your kind comments!!  ~~Paula    (Wocka-wocka!)

Must have been a Sherlock Holmes movie?

05/01/2013 11:49:19

What a FUN Blog! I forgot about about that bear! My youngest son watched Seseame Street when he was little; almost from the day he was born. I bought him an Oscar which he still had when he died. Oscar was returned to me after 42 years! He looks pretty bad but when one considers how old he is and all the traveling he's done he's in pretty good shape; no tears, anyway.

Steve kept him on his bed all the time. I asked him once what he's do with Oscar when he got married. He said he's just move him over. NO ONE was taking Oscars place and no one did!
