Native Floridians
Posted On 07/18/2022 08:37:47 by Beth777

The Native Floridians in the above titled blog are not, in fact, humans. I am speaking of the wildlife we are surrounded by in my part of the sunshine state.  Summer, by it's nature, being a time of plenty for the animals, has brought them out in full force in my little corner of the world.

In the last month alone we've encountered (in our immediate yard and treeline) a coyote, 4 armadilloes doing their best to destroy our lawn, a rabbit, a possum, too many squirrels and birds to count and no less than 3 snakes. The first snake was a King snake, the second a venomous Cotton Mouth Moccasin and yesterday a big Black Racer.  They are harmless and eat mice and insects so we don't bother them.

There's a large, very vocal and very bossy mockingbird who lives nearby and imagine my surprise to see her "chasing" and "scolding" the snake as he made his way across my driveway yesterday,  into the fenced portion of my yard.  I'm not sure what he was doing to alarm her, mayebe she had babies nearby.  It was almost comical though.  He was much larger than her and seemed to be minding his own business. She lit on him with her feet and seemed to be trying to scratch him.  He scurried under a nearby stump for protection. This amused me and wanted to share while it was fresh in my memory.

In the Winter we have Black Bear and lots of Deer too. I count myself blessed to share the habitat with my fellow Floridians.  ♥

Love the mockingbird/snake story!  The mockingbirds often dive bomb us as we get the mail when they have babies in the nest!

I enjoyed everyone's comments! Rider, we had a snake at large for 3 days and nights in my house, once.  We caught him with a glue board eventually. The kind you use for mice. I can't imagine sitting down on the couch with one though! Deb, no alligators here but my next door neighbor has a pond on his property and they have been spotted there several times.  The hawks are magnificent. I love the Raptors. We have Barred Owls here.

It's got to be no less than amusing living where you do, Beth.  You are so lucky to not only to have this wildlife sharing your space (or are you sharing theirs?) but to be aware of, and notice the other animals God created for our enjoyment.

I was watching a you tube video a few days ago from a couple from NC. They live about 90 minutes N of me. They were recently in Sarasota FL and made mention of certain frogs there that are poisonous.

All those creatures great and small keep things interesting for you. That must have been some sight seeing the mockingbird telling the snake to go away!
