I survived the DMV office
Posted On 07/15/2023 20:19:28 by momtocam

So yesterday (Friday) I decided to renew my drivers license..even though it doesn't expire till end of next month. Earlier I had made an attempt to schedule an appointment, which would have made things so much easier. Apparently, that was no longer an option, as the earliest spot available is September. My courage and just plain annoyance of this dreaded requirement of life, nudged me on to their office mid day. Mind you, they don't even allow you to come in till after 12 pm. I drove up precisely at 11:50 am...hence, there was already at least 20 people in line. It was already heating up outside, but I just wanted to get this over with. Can you say 2 1/2 hours? I had not eaten lunch. The wait seemed endless. A State run office was short staffed..where have we seen this before? ....it seems to be the norm now. I headed home to find something to eat. My nerves were frayed, yet I was elated to have gotten this task accomplished. I'm good to go now for 13 years. NC renews license for 8 years..then after this time frame ends I can renew online..and by that time, the renewal will be for 5 years. It keeps swirling in my head that this will be a long time away, but in reality, I know it will come all too soon. Yesterday may as well have been Friday the 13th...but it's over and done with. I can sleep better now. The new license should arrive in snail mail within 10 days. Now we wait.

I switched my NJ licence to NC about 2 years after I came down here as that's when it expired.  I was determined not to do it till then.   When I did, it was a breeze as a friend worked at the DMV and set up my day and time.  She waved me in from outside - no one was allowed  to go - only one at a time.  When I wasn't sure of an answer she gave me suttle hints.  Not sure when it expires and don't know if the state tells you when it's time to renew sor not.  It probably won't be as easy as the first time, as she has left the office and moved to another job.  I can relate to your frustrations at the system as that's the way Jersey's used to be till they got a new system  - now it's a breeze.  At least you won't have to do it again for a while.

Thankfully, her in AZ we can renew online so the only hiccup would be if the computer goes wacky.  Judy

My picture was horrible too..the disdain I had just undergone sitting in a chair for 2 1/2 hours clearly showed up in my facešŸ„“

At my age I renew by mail. But they get you one way or another. I had to go for a new picture and  yes I had to wait my turn. By the way the picture was awful.

Glad you got it done!  I've been putting off going in for my 'real ID'. Our local office is so bad (snotty people, etc) that we now go one town over when needed. In Illinois, a license is only good for 4 yr. Mine isn't due till 2025, but...I may go sooner just to switch to the Real ID. (I dont fly & probably won't need to go to any federal courthouses,but...) Oh, and at our age: they will probably make me take a driving test when I do 'renew'.

I feel for you. It seems to be a nightmare anymore.
